Our Ram 2500 CTD is an 05 with the auto tranny. 115K miles and not problems with it so far.

However, we have had some of the front-end/death wobble issues the trucks are prone to that were not a cheap fix.

Overall has been a great truck, however.

In the mid 2000 era, the auto trans were improved drastically. 97-2002 not so. If you are going to be towing weight over 6,000 lb's I would recommend the manual trans. The only problem with the 5-spd. manual trans was 5th gear spinning off the shaft while overworking it under load, towing heavy. There is an update on the 5th gear secondary shaft where a clamp nut can be installed to stop this from happening. I own a 96 2500 diesel truck (juiced up) with the 5-spd. and have not had any issues with 5th gear, even towing 13,000 lb. However when towing a ton of weight uphill, I downshift to 4th.

If at all possible buy one with the NV5600 but if the truck is everything you want i wouldnt shy away from it cause of the trans just have to take the good with the bad

thanks guys i agree with all of ya! but with what you said skip i'm 19 and a college student and its gonna be a major investment for me to buy a diesel so i would want one that will last a while because i dont think i could afford a new tranny if the one i get fails or let alone anything else so i'm crossin my fingers and lookin for the right deal i dont wanna force it just quite yet

if you dont wanna replace the tranny then buy a manual if you buy an auto you WILL be replacing it and probably sooner than later. The stock trans suck but can be built into a very reliable trans but your going to drop some $$$ to do it
