I hear the auto trans had issues (tc and high presure value or something). I understand by 2004 this was fixed, but what about 2003?

Also, what about the 6 spd's and the 5 speeds? I was told that the 6 speeds all come with the HO engine?

My 02 is at 310,000 hard, mostly towing miles, and only on it's second transmission. I think the bad tranny stories are a bit exagerated.

I've done a lot of reading and from what I've seen the "bad" tranny stories are usually routed in the fact that Dodge forgot to tell anyone (owners and lube shops) that you HAVE to use at least ATF +3 preferably ATF +4 in the autos or they will burn up. Normal ATF can not take the temperatures that the full synthetic +3 and +4 can.

As for the NV4500 (5 speed) what always took those out was people leaving them in 5th in town (down into the 20~30mph range) because they were too lazy to shift, the Cummins was fine with the ratio but the trans isn't fine with the torque.

The NV5600 (6 speed) was the only way you could get the HO's, it is a MUCH stronger (and bigger) trans.

From what I understand, when they came out with the new body style ALL of the transmissions got replaced with Germany ones.

I agree.

My transmission went out 2 years ago... lost my overdrive and 1st gear. Every transmission shop told me that it was toast and that I needed to have it rebuilt. A little research and troubleshooting led me to believe that I had a bad shift solenoid. I tore it apart and tested the solenoids... turns out that two of them were bad. The Overdrive solenoid and Governer Solenoid.

$250 and 4 hours later I had a transmission that shifts and feels like new. Sure beats a $4k rebuild. Automatic transmissions are really not as scary to tear into as I was led to believe.

for the cummins, the 47re was offerd untill late 2003/2004. Its an ok trans but a hopped up cummins will eat it after a while. No HO cummins were given this auto (only the non HO). The 48RE was introduced in late 2003/2004 and is stronger and was put behind the HO.
