I'm looking at one for a commuter car and can find a 2003 Neons for $4000 or less. That seems like a waaay cheap price for that new of a car. Any options on these?

wow, how can you turn down that price... I had a friend with an older one (one of the first years of it) and didn't have any problems till he got around 150k miles, then he started having to dump a bunch of money into it

My sister has a 99? and she's only had minimal issues. Timing belt, fuel line, battery, alternator, water pump... I think that's it? The timing belt they replaced while they were doing the water pump, since they had to take the belt out to get to the pump - no brainer there I told my sister when she asked if they were trying to scam her for more money. I think she paid about $6k for it in 02'ish?

Unlike many of the Dodge/Chrysler passenger car lines, the Neon was around long enough for plenty of bugs to be worked out. I see very few of the newer ones needing serious repairs, so the more recent years that you're looking at would be a great choice. Sure, they dont hold their value quite like some of the Japanese cars in their class, but if you're gonna drive one 'til the wheels fall off, who cares?

pretty common for the headgasket to be an issue in them, tht could just be first gen though.

every lot I have ever been on, calculates that $4-5oo bill into the cost of the Neon, when they pick it up, whether it be Auction or trade in.

Seemingly thye like to let go @ 45k or so, so if higher mileage than that, (significantly higher -80k or so....), probably been done.

I have a 2003 Neon SE, with a 5 speed and AC... All I wanted on it since I put in my own stereo. I bought it new for a commuter when gas first hit $2/gallon. I've got 60,000 miles on it, which is low but for 2 years my commute was 14 miles roundtrip... Its been all over the western part of the country and I've put 2 sets of tires on it.

I get about 30+MPG depending on where I go and how much stuff/many people are with me, with a best mileage of 35 on a trip with hills and the AC going.

It can be driven in a spirited manner, but it is a little softly sprung for that, and the 175/70R14s aren't all that good for that sort of driving.

It might get traded next year for a Jeep Patriot for commuting.

I wanted the 2003 SRT4, but the insurance would have been a killer... And the seats were too tight a fit for my 6'3" 270# ass. And it rides really rough, but handles like a dream.

Headgasket problems were first generation, second gen seem to have fixed theat, 2000 and up.

Thanks for all the info guys!! I've found several, just need to decided on a manual or a auto trans. Won't be as fast as my '05 GLI that I sold, but I like the MPG.

This is good to hear.

I've been trying to buy another wholesale commuter and the Hondas,Toyotas are too pricey right now.

I ended up finding an 03 SE neon auto with 85k for $1600.00 + TTL. It is in suprisingly good shape but has a salvage title. The title issue doesn't bother me as long as it will last a couple of years. Since nobody buys a neon as a long-term investment I figure I'll drive it until it blows up then just push it off the trailer at pick N pull:rofl:

Jeepin Joe I'm having it completely gone through this week and will post what I found and what to look for when picking one out.

GOAT I hate you now for getting one for that price!! I snagged a '04 SXT auto with 58k on it for $7800. Alot cheapier than my 05 GLI was. I do now where there's a SRT4 for $10500 is.
