Dodge Ram 2500

I am looking at a 2003 dodge ram 2500 for $11,000. It has 85,000 miles on it, but has a v10 motor. I was wondering if it would be worth buying a v10 in that year, or just keep looking for a hemi. I know the v10 won't get that good of gas mileage, but I tend to haul a lot of hay in the summer, and was wondering how well it could handle 12 bales at at time.

I think my Tacoma could handle 12 small bales at a time (usually about 60-100 lbs) unless you're talking the large ones (900-1100 lbs).

I've never owned a V-10 but I haven't heard any big issues other than fuel economy. Usually what you save vs the diesel is more than enough to cover the gas mileage.

Totally Awesome
We had a V10 3500 and a Cummins when I was working for a company in Wyoming. Both had about 225K miles. Both still ran. Both pulled around a lot of heavy equipment in the oil field. Both had manual transmissions. Don't get an automatic unless you like replacing transmissions all the time.

I had a V10 and would never buy another one. My 2003 Chevy 1500 with a 5.3 had more towing power than the V10 and got twice the mileage.

Drove one for a few weeks as a work truck, felt torquey for a gasoline engine but even still I'm pretty sure the V10's were produced as more of a marketing sales point than anything else. Seems like they were designed with the thought that they would be 20% stronger than a V8 and have a mean sound, but didn't deliver either.
