Oh man, somehow I missed this until now. Straight piped Cummins trucks are a love hate relationship. On the old 12 valves they really sound good outside but, due to the poor insulation in the truck it gets really old really quick. On the 24 valves it is just about the same as the 12 valve. On the Common Rail I would suggest some type of a muffler. The mid range drone sounds terrible and will drive you crazy after just a few days. On the 2010 and newer the straight pipe is actually more quiet than the 5.9's are with a muffler. My last tow rig had a dual 4" MBRP system with a MBRP muffler and is louder than my 2010, 6.7L straight piped. I kept my new rig straight piped for a while now and even though I have the muffler I don't think I am going to put it on.

I had a '99 Cummins, straight-piped for a year or so, and then put a good 4" exhaust with a muffler on it. Definitely liked it better with the muffler and bigger exhaust. I now have an '04 Cummins - has been straight-piped for 3 years now and I like it. It's not stupid-loud like my '99 was. It did fail safety last year, so somehow the stock muffler got cleaned out and welded over the straight-pipe;). If there's a drone it's not enough to bother me...I drive it 50+ miles a day.
