does anyone here build subwoofer boxes?

until you have to listen to them ;)

They are just so inefficient due to the mass of the cone. I guess they move a lot of air with a minimum number of drivers, but even SPL competitors go to higher volume of smaller subs. Have you measured the SPL in your Nissan? I used to hit 142.x with 2 10's back when I was like 18--I think I would punch myself in the face if I ever built a system like that which was bass just for the sake of bass.
I went thru the same phase about 10-11 yrs ago i had a car that hit 157.3 it was deafening and hurt to sit in the car:rolleyes: Now i look back on it and think WTF was i thinking thats just way to much bass. I dont mind a clean sounding system but ones that rattle your brain around in your head is to much now days:rofl: Man im getting old!

157 is crazy. That's like, ratchet strap your doors shut and have 15 buddies pushing on them loud lol.

We had a guy that ran 8 modified 81000D's to 2 RFL's. A normal 81000D would put out about 67 volts AC (which works out to about 1500 watts at the impedence he was at), his were doing 82 volts AC each, so each VC on the RFL's was gettin 164 volts AC--each sub was getting 328 volts, and he had a total of 656 volts between the two subs. He also ran 16 batteries.

Purely for SPL obviously, and he is an electrical engineer so it was more about just seeing if he could do it. I learned everything I know from that guy. I don't remember exactly, but I think it got into the 160's.

I have a 18" sub (JBL 2245h pro driver In a 8cubic foot box, not something you could use in a car) in my main home system. It is not inefficient and is the most musical sub I have ever listened to (and I have listened to a lot). the 15 inch versions of the driver are less efficient. Check out the JBL 2258h 18" drivers for what is probably the most badass driver in the world right now.

Box looks sweet you did a awesome job! Cant wait to hear it, maybe i can bribe ya do do a better box in my heep some day;) mine just takes up way to much room:(

LOL it wasnt quite ratchet the doors shut but at 157 you really couldn't sit in the car and breath at the same time. The system was in a 2000 Chevy lumina:rofl: and i was running 4 12's JL W6's and don't even remember how many watts. The box was built by JL Audio and Boyers car audio. JL sent a couple guys out to help with the design. They had my car down at Boyers for about 7 days. I put a total of just under 15K in the system that was including the dvd player and tv's subs everything. Now i look back and think good lord 15k you know what i could have bought for 15k:rolleyes: I will dig thru some pics and post some of the car and system. But did sell it and buy a sweet 68 Chevelle SS:cool: But that wasnt very long lived! Damn divorces:mad::mad:

You're comparing home audio to car audio though. I consider it apples and oranges. That 18 was probably engineered from the ground up to be an 18, as opposed to most car audio subs which are designed as a 10 or 12 and then they just keep slapping bigger/heavier cones onto the same VC and magnet. Also, you have more freedom for box design and you can use much better power to control the driver.

All true, except for the apples to oranges bit. For me anyway it has always been about making the music sound best. The most musical car system I have ever heard did not use any drivers meant for the car market at all.

Moving the higher amount of air makes them more efficient, not less efficient than smaller divers.

Larger drivers have a reputation of sounding worse because statistically you sell more 10's and 12's than 15's or 18's and manufacturers didn't spend any time on the drivers they didn't sell.

Basically, the norm was to build one motor and bolt it into a frame of each size. The result is as moving mass increases, you had less control.

If a driver is designed completely so that all the parts work together, there should be no difference in SQ from a 10" or a 15" only output should be detected in an A/B comparison. There's only one manufacturer that optimizes everything to work together for each model: JL Audio.

Oh. You already said that part.
