Dog dropped off at my house

Saturday night just before midnight, by some wierd chance I looked out the window before heading off to bed, what do I see? Some asshat pulls up on the street out in front of my house stops, opens his truck door, sets a little dog out on the road and drives off. So I go out and call the little pup in, turns out its a young jack russell terrier, probably about 8-12 mos. old. It is scared as can be. I bring it inside for the night. The next day I expect a mess in the room where I put it for the night. None...turns out its house trained and knows all the basic stuff, sit, stay, etc...

I run it to the vet, no chip, no tags. I'd like to keep the little guy, but it is driving wifey's cat crazy (not that it's a long drive). Here is how Sunday played out. Dog sees cat, torments cat, cat swats dog with claws, dog yelps and fears cat. Cat sees this and now hunts dog like a mountain lion hunting a wounded deer. Later dog forgets about cat's claws and torments cat again and again gets the claws, then the dog is stalked again by the cat. This goes on and on and on. Oh and throw in the mix a screaming 4 month old who is either sick or colicy.

Good times :-\

This morning the whole thing started again until it was time to take Jr. to daycare. Thank God I'm at work now, a little piece and quiet!

What do you think I should do? I've wanted a Jack Russell for a few years, but didn't want to pay the high $ everyone wants for one. But I'm afraid the timing isn't right, adjusting to the baby, and the evil cat from hell. Had this of happened a year earlier or even a year later it would be Happy new dog to me (the cat would either get over it or die unhappy).

Should I stick it out a few weeks and see how things go, should I sell it on KSL.com, Should I say Merry Christmas to someone and just give it away to a good home? It's far too nice of a dog to send to the pound.

I've called the local vets and left a description and the county pound in case anyone is looking for the little guy. Also I put up a bunch of flyers in the hood. I'm hoping the guy that dropped it saw it running loose and picked it up, but saw no tags and just dropped it back off. I do know if anyone calls I'm asking if they know anyone with a red ford truck with a powerstroker, because that's what the asshat was driving, and I'm not about to give it back just to be dropped again.

I'd say give it a couple weeks and I think that they'll start getting use to each other. Seems most animals need a bit of time to grow accustomed to each other before they'll play nice.

I'd consider keeping it but if you decide not to, find a reputable (clean & friendly) dog "rescue" nearby. Most of the rescue places are setup to house and feed mistreated & abandoned dogs and they will find a good family for the dog to go to.

i think you should wait a couple weeks, the cat will calm down. my parents have 3 cats and 2 dogs, most of the time things are really calm but sometimes they get to playin.

Jack Russells are supposed to be the smartest dog. It's the only dog I ever had any interest in getting. I'd say give it a few weeks and see if things calm down. If keeping it just isn't in the cards, see if another RME member wants it.

Keep it for a few weeks, most animals just need time to adjust (dogs usually longer than cats). If that does not work out, give it a good home. If you intend to keep both, I would highly discourage declawing the cat. Even if both animals begin to at least tolerate each other the dog will most likely go nuts on occasion and attack the cat. If the cat has no way to tell the dog to 'back the f*ck off' (claws) then you could end up with a dead cat and a pissed wife.

Declawing the cat is out. It is 9 years old and comes and goes inside and out through a cat door(acutally a medium dog door) and the cat is diabetic and insulin resistant. Even giving a large dose of insulin only gets his blood sugar down to about 350 or so (normal 80). So stress from declaw would more than likely kill it since it already has one foot in the grave.

Beleive me if it were my cat it would have hit the bricks a long time ago, but as we all know what makes the Mrs. happy makes us happy.

Oh and X3 on the squirt gun. I already have it for when the little SOB gets to meowing in the middle of the night. Kitty no likey.

Give the pup a few weeks the cat will probably get used to it. My wife has four cats "soon to be three if i can find the other one, he knows i am looking with a lead boot" and they hated my Eski for the longest time but have soon got over it now its a simple hiss when they pass. Kinda like me and the wife, ya just get used to it. But if you dont keep it I would surely give him a warm bed(wifes side)

Take the cat to another neighborhood around, say midnight, and drop it off in the middle of the street. Consider it a trade-in.;)
