Planning a trip for later in the year (mid December) and am trying to find a good route to see some new terrain. I've been through a few of these areas, but never in the winter months. I'm interested to know what you know, places to see, places to camp, snow issues, etc. Thanks in advance!

Griffin Road
Escalante Summit Trail
Corn Creek Road
Powell Point Trail
Barney Top Trail
Tantalus Creek Trail

You probably will need a snowmobile for most of those roads in December. Very high altitude, like 10,000 ft..

I'm not sure about Tantalus Creek, but I've been on the rest. Easy graded roads, but very scenic mountain terrain. The views from Barney Top and Powell Point are incredible.

Sadly that what I figured... my books/maps show most of them in higher elevations and physically closed in the winter months... I guess I was hopefull I would hear differently. Thanks for the heads up...

keep me in the loop kurt.

Will do... likely going to happen the weekend of Dec 11th? At this point we are thinking White Rim or SR Swell...

or, if I have my jeep, we could do an arizona strip trip---maybe down into whitney pockets, and then come up to st. george from the south...

Thats an interesting idea... when were you thinking of doing the Whitney Pockets? For some reason I though you were going to go this weekend or the next?

It's next weekend (of the 10th) but I don't have my other rig yet and therefore no transportation. It's more of a camping/hiking thing than wheelin. Last time we just camped in one spot and did some day hikes and exploring. Really cool area---and remote because of how hot it is nobody goes back in there in the summer.

Ah, I remembered they were coming up shortly... too close to SEMA for me to sneak out twice as I recall. I've got clearance from Dec 6-10th, I've been chatting about trip options with the regulards (TrickyDicky, etc) and we don't have anything firmed up yet. I need to send out an email to all interested in the next day or two, if those dates will work for Az.Strip & Whitney Pockets, lets consider it. Get me a bit of info on the trip if you could...

I'll see if I can track down some stuff iln a bit

I can't look at google earth here at work, but if you wanted to look at some maps before I have time to get on teh program here is some info as I remember it...

You head west out of misquite on i15, take the next exit cross under the freeway to the south and take a road that parallels the freeway to the west for a few miles. the road then takes off to the south towards some mountains. Due west is Lake Mead (which you can see in the distance). The main road heads up and over a pass and then down where you can take the back roads all the way into utah and up to st. george from the south. Seems like the road sign said 104 miles to st. george--and that was after probably 30 miles of dirt already. Seems like there were a bunch of different ways to head back up.....I'm sure you have maps of the area.

here is my original trip report

Not sure why the pictures aren't working. I still have them at home.

I did the Tantalus Creek trail this year. It is a nice scenic trail that is moderately difficult and has some great camping spots if you know where to go. I posted some pictures in the trip report section. Look for my post on the Boulder Mountains. You can start in Capital reef or at Lower Bowns reservoir depending on which way you want to go. It will be slippery in places when wet. I did the trail in 2 low but it was dry when we did it.
