double towing a jeep

So in my case, I have 2k of my trailer weight in the back of my truck. If they weighed me, would they unhook my trailer and weigh it, or would they just weigh the weight on the trailer axles. If they just weigh the weight on the axles, then I am fine because I deduct the weight of the truck.

Oh, and btw, every damn tripple axle toy hauler has to exceed the 12K number. I would assume anyone pulling a tripple axle that isn't a dually is over. (I saw a tounge pull tripple axle toy hauler being towed by a 1/2 ton ford on Labor Day :)

My truck weighs about 7300 (guess) That means 20,220 - 7,300 = 12,900. Does that mean I am 900 lbs into a ticket? If so, there would have to be thousands of guys in Utah in the same predicament.

Kirk

I think you are worse off than you think. The 12K tag means 12K total. I don't think you get to deduct the weight of the truck.

Kris, does that mean combined weight? If so, most of us towing anything of any substance (say a Jeep on a trailer-Jeep being 4500 lbs, trailer 1500) with a SuperDuty or whatever (my crew weighs, 7800 lbs) are needing to register for weight. If that's how the law reads, I should probably register my truck for it. By my math, I'm overweight with that load.

4500
1500
7800
____

13,800 That's without my butt in the seat and other gear in the truck........

It's combined weight. Your right Mark if we hook a trailer with a rig on it your pretty much going to be over. If you get stopped by UHP then they right you for whatever you are over. When I right that ticket it's a set $75. It's called insifficent registration. To the UHP it's just overweight. IF you where to get stopped you would be getting a ticket for about. $50.
Yes the chances are slim but I know the UHP are starting to crack down on this.

When we weigh a truck it's everything hooked up. We take the gross weight, and write you for how far over 12K you are, there's no unhooking. If you weigh 20,220 LBS, and your only registered for 12K, your over 8,220 LBS. So $461.00 in a ticket.

There are thousand, and thousands of guy's with these kinds of set up's, and there starting to check on this stuff. I write this stuff but for commerciel trucks. I also sell permits to privet owners for there oversize boats, trailer combinations, sheds. Anything over 8' 6" wide 14" height, 65" long combination. Just giving a heads up.

I'm sorry, but that has to be BS. - Not calling you a liar, just venting......

My paperwork says my truck is rated to pull 11,800 without the weight of the truck. My neighbor is a UHP. I have talked to him various times about me double towing my 5th wheel, and jeep. He has never mentioned anything even close to this. If I remember right, he said they would hold me to the manufacturers numbers. That is a hell of a lot more than what you are saying.

Doesn't our registration verify the GCVW stuff? I would think by paying the license, we pay to use the vehicle to its specs.

I will have another conversation with my neighbor.

So, where I do go to register for weight? My county courthouse? Then I get to knab one of those '70s weight stickers for my truck? :greg: If I register it for 21,999, I can tow up to that amount even though it's over the amount my truck is rated for?

Thanks for the info, by the way. I hope people realize you're only doing your job according to the law.

They only let you do it in even encriments (sp). So 22,000 LBS. Just go to the DMV say I tow ?????? much weight.

At what weight do I need to upgrade my class 'D' license? That's what I'm shooting for......(not that I'd try to approach that much weight with my current truck)

It dosen't bother me at all but thats how it is in the code book. Give your UHP neighbor the codes, and have him look them up. Alot of UHP troopers, and other officers have no clue about this stuff but when they do find out they'll let you find out.
It dosen't mater what the manifacture says it can haul it still need to be registered for weight over 12K.

As long as your not commercil you won't have to upgrade your license. If you where commercil then 26,001 LBS is when you need a class B CDL. OR if your truck + trailer combined GVWR is over 26,001 LBS then you need a CLass A CDL..

I just called the DMV. They seemed to say the same thing as Kris. Our normal registration covers us up to 12K combined. Then, if we want to pay for heavy weight, we pay the difference between 12k, and the amount we want. Two examples were to raise it to 20k, it would cost $82.00 more that we already paid. For 26,000 it would cost $137.50 additional. I asked it we then coudn't get a ticket even though we are heavyier than the mfg sugested weight, she said yes - no ticket (I'm suspicious about that)

Anyway - this sucks, but there is a way to make it leagal.

Is that per year? Every time we register? I'd assume it is.

Yes, every year. They do pro-rate it, so I guess if you worked it just right, and your normal registration ended the winter, you could go in 1/2 way through your year, and pay for the months left. Then do the same again the next year??

I really want to do this, but still a little nervous about it.

Both trailers are bumper pulls. Would you put the RV and then the Jeep trail or jeep trailer and then RV. I thought about putting the Jeep trailer first because I can adjust the Jeep to compinsate the RV on the rear.

I know Goosneck. But my truck it to high I would have a trailer siting higher than a semi flat bed.

Give me reason for that. I need to know all aspects

And what one is longer? (My preference is to go long to short if it is possible. Weight seems to be heavier on the longer things that I pull.)

Usually, your loaded up camping trailer, with water and coolers, etc. will weigh more than your jeep, unless you have a really small trailer. Also, your camping trailer should already be weighted correctly, so it wont fishtail and what not. And lastly, you can get to camp, pull your jeep off the trailer and run some trails, and then set up camp later, but this is just a bonus reason.

Good point, very good point. My RV is a 19ft Road ranger. With is fully loaded it is about 1000lb lighter than my 16ft 10K LB Big bubba and Jeep. Plus I was thinking if I needed to move the jeep forward to counter act the toungh (SP??) weight of the RV.
I have the room to move things aroung on the flat bed, but no the RV.
Thanks for the help. maybe I will get another rig to pull the RV while I pull the Jeep and trailer
