Doubler Dilema

why do you need the 4 speed atlas? Just do the old style 3.7 or the 4.3 that should be good. If you spend 1500 on the doubler what is another 4-500 for an atlas that is easier and faster and more functional!

Good Luck!

Hmmm......That's true. With the automatic I really like the idea of extra choices in low range of the 4 speed Atlas or the doubler. Another 500 here and another 500 there, It's just money!

I have a 77 Bronco with 4.10's in the axles and 35" tires. I wanted lower gears until I replaced the C4 for a 435 (standard 4 speed). You might like the automatic better but I love the 6.69 to 1 first gear and I don't have to worry about the tranny heating up. You would still have to get an adapter but its another option to look at.

I have a EFI 7.5L/np435/np203/np205. my bw 1356 needed a rebuild and instead of rebuilding it i built a 203/205.

i got my 203 and my 205 for $100 each. the 205 didn't need anything, the 203 needed a bearing and seals.

it cost me under $1000 to do the swap the most expensive part was the the doubler kit. ($1000 includes driveshaft mods)

203/205 is at least as strong as an atlas, and you can buy parts at napa. there is a 3:1 kit for the 203 out there but i seem to think it is like $1000 (which still $2000 to get 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, and 6:1 in the case is not bad at all)

however it is like 3ft long and 200lbs. so if weight/length are an issue it is not a good choice.

i think you could score a short c6 and rebuild it for less than the $549 for the c4 to 203 adapter. i think the short c6's are the ones that came with the 203's so if you could find them both in the same truck that would rock. then you don't have any wacky custom adaptors which is nice if you do ever break a housing.

why do you think you will have modify links and exhaust to put a c6/203/205 in? xmembers will have to be made for sure.

I think with junkyard parts and doing everything else myself, I could be into the doubler for about $1500.
C-4 to 203 adapter $549
203 $100
203 to 205 adapter $480
205 $100
fab my own shifters and cross members and a minimal amount of driveshaft work and hopefully be at around $1500 and have a final crawl ratio of 48.4 or even keep the Dana 20 and be at around 58 to 1.

Thank you everyone for the input.
If I put a C-6 in place of the C-4, I think it's enough bigger that it would interfere with my upper front links (triangulated 4-link). In that case I would need to change the front suspension (maybe to a 3-link with a panhard bar), which the new location for the lower links would interfere with the exhaust since I had to run it outside the frame at that point to clear the existing upper link. I will have to move the crossmember for the rear lower links anyway because I left just enough room to get a new Atlas in that spot, not enough room (length) to add another 6 inches for the doubler.

How much horsepower do you think the C-6 would rob? Seat of the pants noticeable?

Thanks,
Mike

I have heard 40-60 hp, which seems high to e, but....
I know Rick was not to happy with his and noticed a difference. You'll also need to mod the floor/tunnel/firewall or run 2"+ body lift....the c6 bellhousing is BIG.

Hey Mike, Did you see Lee has his stuff forsale?
"I am changing my entire drivetrain so I have my current set-up on the chopping block. Its a Atlas (3.5 ratio) with a Goliath krawler box (2.7 ratio) and a NV4500 5 speed overdrive transmission. Every part is in great shape! All these parts have less than 1000 miles on them. With this combo comes the centerforce clutch, aluminum bellhousing, flywheel and shifter assemblies. This set-up gives you a 1:1, 2.7:1, 3.5:1, and a 9.45:1.

The NV4500 is a couple of grand by itself, but I will let the entire assembly go for $3000. Let me know if anyone is interested."

I did see that, it's gone now. I kind of ran some numbers through my head and I think I would be into his crawler box and Atlas almost as much as a new 4 speed Atlas.
I am leaning toward the WH kit and keep my C-4, add the Dodge 203, and keep my Dana 20. Of course I may change my mind another couple of hundred times before it actually happens!

Yep, but it sold fast! I think the WH idea is a good one....Most cost effective and uses what you already have:cool:

If I were to do one it would be a 231/241 reduction box with a 300 behind it. If thats not low enough you could put a 4 to 1 kit in the 300(Thats a 10.92 to 1 low range, wow:eek:). That should fit nice in those skinny frame rails. D.D. machine makes the kit, I think it goes for $399. All you need to provide is the two t-cases, you can find them on por.
