This is what I would do. The 4.0 is a very good motor, and has a very good auto behind it.
And a granny shifter... But you can easily swap that out for a cool one that you can slap around.:)

Well, actually your best and most cost effective option may be to sell your TJ, and buy one that has a 4.0 and a factory automatic. Depending on the year, milage, and condition of the two vehicles you may be able to break even, or even make money on the deal.

My TJ has 74,000 miles on it, i don't think I could sell it and buy a 4.0L out right. it seems there is a $2000-3000 between and 2.5L and a 4.0L for comparable year and mileage. Could I get a used 4.0L and tranny out of a salvage yard and have it installed for the same cost? certainly a 4.0L engine would be good on the wallet because there is not enough horsepower to break the axles right away therefore I wouldn't need to upgrade axles for some time? a big V8 would mean everthing in the drivetrain would need to be upgraded to handle the horsepower, $$$$$$$$.

You can easily break your stock axles with a 4.0 engine. Hell, you can break em with your four popper. Good luck finding a TJ in a junk yard at all, let alone one with a goo engine and a good transmission still in it. I still think you are better off selling yours and buying one properly equipped.

I did the stuff. NV4500 and stock 300. It worked great! you don't need the Klune V with 4500. 100 to 1+ is a waste of money. IMHO and if you are going to the expense of fliping it and lower tcase gears and 32 slpine out put then save 500 bucks and get an atlas. I just dumped the NV4500 and went with a 999 and lowmax and out put. Its a good combo. You can buy it all for the price of the NV4500 and adapters. Keep a 4.0 V8's are cool for stuff but not worth it over a 4.0. I have an old 4.2 with a HO head and injection and I break all the time, 4 ring and pinions and 6 sets of front axles. So I say you forget about all the swap crap and sell your TJ get a 4.0 auto tranny. You will be money and time ahead.

the thought of selling is hard to think about, you become attached when you have put so many hours of work in it....

I think for now the best thing would be to regear the axles.

4.56 or 4.88's?

right now i only have 32" tires and when they wear out i'll go to 33's or 35's if I have a taller lift by then.

Stop it! Don't fall in love! don't spend another dime beyond a for sell sign. It is a waste. Every dollar you spend in a dollar down the tubes. Buy a Rig with a 4.0 you should have never bought that 4 cyr. Sell it to the next sucker.

OK!!! you have a point. I just looked in the tribune for TJ's with 4.0L/auto and there are not very many of them, a few but not a lot. I will start looking on ebay to see what I can find. Does jeep make a lot of wranglers with auto's??? There are certainly a lot of 4.0L/manuel's to choose from. How much would a good auto cost to replace the manuel in and what are some good autos if I can find a good deal on a 4.0/manuel?

The auto that comes stock IS a good one, if you end up buying one, I wouldn't buy one without an auto

Everyone needs to go back up to the first post in the thread. Look at what he had planned. There is a lot of money there and now you are talking him into something less. Auto or manual is an endless debate and If it was me I would buy an auto, but a Hesco 4.7 is better than a 4.0 and a 4500 would be more $ than a built 700r4 which is a better box than the stock jeep offering. V8s were even being debated at one point and now we are talking stock 4.0.

yeah, so? If I had a TJ, and it had a 2.5, I would first kick my butt for buying it, then I would sell it for a TJ with a 4.0 and an auto. I wouldn't even consider a Hesco.

I love to wheel but the four banger could use some more power for the street and the rocks.

Correct me if i'm wrong but if your planning on using this for a DD.

I thought that Utah had a law that any vehicle newer than 1984 could not be registered with an engine in it that was not offered from the factory. This maybe a SL County law or maybe doesn't exist at all but if I remember right that was the law.

I would not consider anything hesco either, It's way overpriced IMHO. If I ever did buy a TJ it would be a 2.5 or what ever drivetrain was cheapest because I would want a big inch stroked Chevy motor and the tranny of my choice. Everyone wants something different but I would never be happy with 200hp in a Jeep again, it would be a letdown. If he did have the money for the 4.7 stroker it would put a bigger smile on his face than a stock 4.0 ever could.

what would really be sweet, is if someone would come up with a serious stroker kit for that 2.5L. Pump it out to about a 3.2 with some nice head work and a bigger throttle body.

Well it your money so do whatever you want.
4.88's is what I have now with my 2.5L(or had) and it worked fine except for crazy speed on the freeway. But in low range and first I could keep up with about everyone on the trails around here and Moab.

Well, I have a stock 4.0 and rarely use all of it's power. I use my Jeep prolly just as hard as anyone, it's done most of the extreme trails in the state, as well as every UROC event for the last two years, and I can't remember the last time I had the pedal all the way to the floor. I wouldn't put a V8 in mine if it was free, and I would run away from a big block! Way too much weight, and I obviously don't need the power, if I'm not even using all the 190 horses I have. The cutting edge of this sport is towards very light, very small engines, big blocks are so 1995.

I have a TBI 350 out of a '95 chev truck ($850) with a stage 2 700r from bowtie overdrives ($1400) in my jeep. I have 4:88 gears and can still go 75 at about 2700-2800 rpm with 33's. (I plan on 35's) I think this is a great combination cause I can crawl good enough, and I can do pretty good on the sand dunes (which is a blast). And about the weight, I think I read that a 350 wieghed the same or less than my old straight 6. - correct me if I'm wrong.

I an very glad I did it, although it cost a lot more than I thought it would.

I have my pedal to the floor all the time. I am not on the cutting edge of the sport or even in the sport like 95% or more of the wheelers out there. I never said big block I said big inch. There are aftermarket small blocks from World, Dart and even GM that can safely be built to 450ci. With the proper parts selection they can weigh less than your 4.0.
