Dual Tranny + Uno T-Case Setup

Now, i know i've been out of the loop for quite some time.... but i just stumbled across this thread on pirate. You might have heard of this setup, or seen it by now... but i thought i'd throw it out there for those who might not have heard of it... if there were such suckers out there... ;)

Kind of intriguing.. What are your thoughts? feelings?

I didn't read through that whole thing, but Marlin has made several setups using two minitruck trannies. Same idea, but not as long as that one looks like it is.

that thread i linked to was started nearly 3 years ago... and i read through alot of it. it appears that the original idea was brought to the pirate table by some guy in Chile... then, by popular demand on that board, some companies started to develop adapters and stuff to run these setups...

i think the ratio's and gear selection would be sweet... not to mention unique... you don't see a setup like that every day.

I think that the big problem with that setup was the trannys ability to handle the amount of torque from the gear reduction, and also the sheer size of the set up, but I guess if you have a 110" plus wheelbase then that wouldn't be an issue.
As I have followed this, the big motivator seems to be the search for more gear reduction with out the added cost of a dual t-case setup.
Now I am all for cheap setups..... however, I think it rather funny that on PBB where you'll get your a** flamed off if you even mention using PIPE of anything other than a WARN winch in order to save some coin, that they have embrased an inferior design motivated by a need (or want) to save money.
That is all.

I've seen a two tranny setup for a T-18, Because they are extremely short and because of the spud gear there is a femle input shaft that will mate to the output shaft of the other t-18, they claim in low gear there is little or any difference in the amount of torque the trans can hold, it's when you put the rear transmission in 3rd gear and the first transmission in 1st there tends to be a problem.

There is an awesome double tranny on the marlin crawler board that a guy built. I think its two W-56s. I havent been there in a while so I don't know how its holding up, but from what I know about those trannys, I wouldn't expect it to last too long, especially considering that if you need those kinds of gear ratios, you are probably going to be in alot of situations (high torque) that are not good for transmissions anyway. Thats when you hope you are as underpowered as possible.

here's a side thread that popped up which has abit of testimonial towards the end of the thread from a guy running the setup... also, this thread is a good example of some of the jerks on the board...

yeah, thats pathetic. Except for...
why do you want your DUAL trannies fighting each other, DUELING was so 2 centuries ago.

if you run the second backwards does it cancle out the first and you go nowhere?

...which isn't rude, it's just freakin hilarious.

i sold a tranny to a guy who was doing this set up. might be kinda cool just cause you could always run stock 4.10s but have slightly lower gears in your tranny for driving around town(if that makes sence?) but i think ill just stick to my dual cases. theyve been proven to hold up to a good beating from me and im plenty low geared with 2 stock cases

I've seen this done a dozen times in farm beaters, and sprinkler pipe moving mobile's. One that sticks out in my mind was a....a.... well I guess it was a car of some sort (more like a battle ship) running a 727 auto behind a old 4 speed of unknown make. The combo was about 30 mabey 40 feet long (give or take). WHY? I don't really know, but my point is that the idea has been put to use for years outside the wheelin' world.
I think it would be cool, (Expecially having two 4500's or 465's in a rig) BUT ONLY if somone could make it reasonably light, short, strong and comparably priced with dual T-cases. If anything it's nice to know that people are still thinking outside the box :)

I'm in process of the dual's.....Making template's and going to be after some plate on monday.I've been waiting month's for the adapter's to come out and decided to make my own.Not that difficult, just some time.
I'm looking for the cheap way so I can run down the highway using stock 4:10 diff's,rolling 37's and also use the gearing of the tranny's while playing.People have there doubt's about the strength but some of the guy's over on pirate have been beating them and they are still holding up

i am contemplating putting a sm420/465 behind a toyota tranny as a range box. why a 420/465? because they were put behind big block motors and hold up really well. a toy 4cylinder will not output that kind of toque, even when the torque output is multiplied via a toy trans.

What mod's are needed to hook a SM trans to a yota trans-like some sort of coupler?

The 465's have got to be one of the most bomb proof trannies ever offered in a light duty pickup. The only problem I could see (besides adapters) is hanging that kind of weight behind the factory aluminum trans. I mean they weigh more than a brick s#@t house! With a really well built cross member I don't think it would be a huge problem though ;)
