EFFING WEATHER! Alternate camping places??? HELP!!

So, we were planning on heading up AF canyon this weekend and were told that as long as the weather stayed nice this week, the gates should open, but now with the dang storm that just passed through there's no chance of that, SO, I need some suggestions on some other similar camping spots.

MY PROBLEM:
My wife is almost 8 mo. pregnant, and although she reeeeeally wants to go camping, she doesn't want to be out in the desert this time because of hot flashes, no shade, and not quite as much to do (says she). Shes a trooper outdoors but told me that just this once, she'd like to be picky about the camping spot. We love AF canyon because it's all shaded, and if we're not on our dirtbikes or in the rig, there are "pretty" places to hike to or dead trees to hack on with the hatchet (my wife loves to do that), so do any of you know of another area with wooded conditions similar to the AF canyon that's open? We don't like "campground" areas with designated spots, picnic tables, or outhouses....more like dirt roads with random fire rings here and there along the edges.

We live in Lehi, and are looking for a place not too far off, as this will be the first "shake down trip" with the 'runner I'm finishing this week, and I don't want to be left too stranded, too far away.

Any suggestions?? We don't really know of any others that meet this criteria because AF canyon is so close and never really gets old to us so we always just go there!

Thanks!

Ty

Hobble creek usually opens the gate before AF and meets all your criteria (I'm not sure if it is open yet though), Diamond fork is for sure open and also has some nice spots, I'm not sure about spots but you may be able to get into some camping areas up snake creek canyon in midway. Good luck.

I second Diamond fork canyon.. and if she is up to a hike it is only a couple miles to the hot springs :)

...dead trees to hack on with the hatchet (my wife loves to do that)..

That's odd...

I'm not sure if there is anywhere to camp up East Canyon other than designated spots.. Just popped in my head as a possibility.

Hatcheting dead trees, really?

Blackrock Canyon out near 5 mile? Anywhere out near the 5 mile area?? There' some wooded areas for your wife to get her aggression out..

Along the PET in the wooded areas?

Harker Canyon?

BTW.. This all could've been avoided had you not decided to have a baby.. Hopefully you've learned your lesson and choose more wisely next time.

I was just up the canyon above wallsburg this week. no snow (maybe some now), and it was nice. A few camping spots and plenty of wood to chop. Nice little stream and very shaded. Plus, the grill in town has some sweet fajitas.

The gate is open so you can go from hobble creek to diamond fork. I also like lake fork there is no gate there and alot more places to camp then hobble creek and diamond fork. well unless you liked paved camp grounds.

ya the entire range south of 5 mile pass would be great.. lots of places to go, heck you could go spend the night in an old train tunnel if you were so inclined.. all are close to you :) - Broad Canyon, Black rock canyon, 12 mile pass (any of the turnoffs up that way), heck you could even go check out Scranton.

There's a shortage of dead trees to hatchet around Scranton.. I'd focus your travels elsewere...

8 months preggo??? This camping trip should be at the Grand America. You should spoil her for a couple days because all hell is about to break out.
