Unless laws have changed (never happens  ), you should be fine without a cat for model years '83 and older. I'd probably check with my favorite muffler shop or county emissions dept. for the word from "the man".

I'd imagine it'd be faster to call the state than browse the website? A quick google search didn't seem to bring anything up for me.

I just did my emissions in SLC on my '78 with no cat, passed with no issues, maybe the UC has different laws though?

I know pre '84 if it will pass without it you don't need it.

Cam, when I was licensed to do safety and emissions a few years back, a cat was not required until later model years unless a cat was originally installed from the manufacturer. If your Jeep came from the factory with a cat, you have to have a cat.

^ this is how I know it, but can check my book. the fastest and safest bet is to check the hood sticker, (if it has one still/ever) if it lists the emissions system it needs to have it.

after looking quikly threw my IM inspection book, I really only found this statement that relates to your question. If I where to enter it does not have a cat, it would fail the visual inspection and not even let me run the test, just auto fail it. which makes me believe that it needs the cat.

"1968-1989 model year vehicles require the I/M Inspector to check for the presence and the apparent operability of only the AIR system, the Catalytic converter, and fuel neck restrictor."

Best bet is to call the county as they are the real source of the "YES" or "NO" ...

Interesting, I was told by several guys testing various truck over the years that pre-84 if it can pass without a cat it doesn't need one.
Even if it came from the factory with one.

No Cat needed and no visual IM inspection of any kind required on pre 84s. Unless things have recently changed. If they have I am going to be really upset.

A '77 qualifies for the new antique laws. If you can claim it as "recreational" use it counts. One time safety/emissions and never have to deal with them again.
That's what I would do! And I think the fee's are lower also

I have a 78 is it always going to be 77 or is it a rolling kind of a thing? I have never heard of this.

Tell me more. :). Shouldnt we have a thread on this. My scrambler is an '81.

Basically, you have the option to NOT have your vehicle safety inspected any longer. However, I can't seem to find that reference at the moment for some reason?

A '77 qualifies for the new antique laws...
Brand new. It was passed during the 2011 legislative session.

...I have never heard of this.
...Shouldnt we have a thread on this...
I was surprised too that there wasn't more publicity about this among our user group. I first learned of it about a month ago in a SEMA Action Network newsletter, but hadn't heard anything about it locally until this thread.

quick question for you guys, do you know of any testing places that have a "no pass no pay" type of deal? I saw someone online say something about that but it was a post from a few years back.
