351M, 352, 360, 390, 400
I know those for sure, but someone else might know if they went up to 408, 427, or the 428. I just can't remember.

rjmax said:I know it used to have a 351 (windsor, cleveland, modified??????) and now it has a 400. The owner wants to put the 351 back in it. Will the transmission bolt up to either the 400 or 351 without an adapter? All the owner wants is a running engine that will bolt in with what he has with the least amount of effort possible.
Burl Swift said:Unless there was any modification to the bell housing my guess is that it had a 351M in it. 351M's and 400's have the same bolt pattern. You can tell the difference between an 351M and a 351W but looking at where the thermostat housing is. If the thermostat housing is bolted to the intake manifold then its a 351W, if it goes into the engine block itself then its a 351M, which is what you need from the sound of it.
Edit - and for the record, the tranny should be a C6
