The good ones had Chevy engines.. :)

Back then wasn't the 351 a common size, with an option to get a 400? I bet a Ford guy here will correct me soon.

A mid 70's F150 would have had one of the following:

351M, 352, 360, 390, 400

I know those for sure, but someone else might know if they went up to 408, 427, or the 428. I just can't remember.

Can you get a picture of the motor? especially the valve cover area, or count how many bolts hold down the valve covers. See if you can find a casting # also.

I know it used to have a 351 (windsor, cleveland, modified??????) and now it has a 400. The owner wants to put the 351 back in it. Will the transmission bolt up to either the 400 or 351 without an adapter? All the owner wants is a running engine that will bolt in with what he has with the least amount of effort possible.

Unless there was any modification to the bell housing my guess is that it had a 351M in it. 351M's and 400's have the same bolt pattern. You can tell the difference between an 351M and a 351W but looking at where the thermostat housing is. If the thermostat housing is bolted to the intake manifold then its a 351W, if it goes into the engine block itself then its a 351M, which is what you need from the sound of it.

Edit - and for the record, the tranny should be a C6

If this is the case, does anyone have a running 351M they want to get rid of?
