Engine rebuilders

Now that I know what I'm doing I need some suggestions for local engine builders. I need to have a complete lower end of a 350 rebuilt and possibly stroked depending on the cost and will be putting brand new Vortec heads on it. Once all thats done I'll pull the one out of truck and transfer all the stuff over and drop it in. Anyone have some good shops to recommend?? And what should I expect to pay??

Strasburg Machine in Pleasant Grove did the machine work on my 400 horse SBC years ago. I was pleased with the work, time & cost.

would you care to share the price?

Since it was about 14 yrs ago, I can't hardly remember! Even if I remembered, I'm not sure it would be anywhere near accurate since it was so long ago. I just remember them being 'the machine shop' to use for performance work. Calling them would be the best bet if you want an accurate estimate.

South Valley Machine off of 90th south and I -15.

The guys there are great about explaining what you will get for how much.

basic rebuild with a little extra $1000-$1500 range... I am guessing, we went big on the last motor and it was spendy, but FUN.

South Valley is good, or if you're looking for a shop close to home try Hunter Machine. Also, I'd just get the machine work done, then buy the parts through Summit Racing and assemble the engine yourself if you want to save some bucks.

You'll need a new crank and rods to build a stroker, so that's going to add to the cost substantially.

I have had not-so-hot luck with one of the previously mentioned shops, but Pro Machine has done several heads, and a couple motors for me. Killer work, and good pricing, too.

I used Clegg Automotive on Geneva Road and Center Street in Orem for the build-up on my 350 Chev. All I can say is they were great. There were some problems with the first set of heads I took them so they called me and axplained my options and waited while I brought them a new set of heads (about an 85 mile trip one way for me). These guys have been around a long time and they really know their bussiness. I will not even consider anyone else for my next build-up\ re-build.

Pretty sure Grainger is gone? I heard that NAPA sold out to a new owner?

Grainger was pretty good, they did 50+ Toyota motors for Cruiser Outfitters over the years, including two of mine. Had a couple of minor issues over the years but overall Russ & crew did a kick butt job.

x2 on assembling it yourself. Have the shop do the bore/hone, assembly of pistons and rods (they should have a rod oven, VERY USEFUL!), and the cam bearing install. Everything else you can do yourself.

Also, BCGPER posted you a link to some stroker parts, and along that line, there are a lot of cheapish stroker kits for 350's out there... Powerhouse, at www.enginekits.com, has some: but watch out for off-brand bearings and whatnot. PAW also sells strokers, but usually w/good bearings/gaskets.

Summit sells rebuild kits with excellent parts, and not a lot of money.

And finally, Pro Machine did a Jeep 360 for me in '97 and I remember that it cost $8/hole for the bore job, and I want to say about $400 out the door for a bore/hone, wristpins, cam bearings, and a good cleaning after they got done so I could just get on the assembly in the middle of winter. :D

Anyway.

Yup, Granger Machine behind Granger Auto Parts. Not sure where Russ went after that but if you ever find him please let me, know that guy knows engines! Plus, I like to see the look on his face when I plop a 75 pound connecting rod on his desk. :D

FWIW, I've also used Love Machine on 7th west and 1700 south on some of my large engines with good results. Not sure how they are on automotive engines though.

35th So behind the Napa? I was pretty sure they were gonners :(

Its on the tip of my tougue, but I just can't remember. Someone recently told me where he was working... I want to say it was one of the equipment rental places?

They did my very first Land Cruiser inline 6, they did all the machine work, my dad and I did the assembly. I've also had them plane some intake/exhaust manifolds too. No complaints at all there. Longtime dudes in the business.

I had pretty bad luck with cleggs in orem when I built my big-block I had them do a set of heads, they were extremely poorly done. I had to have 1/2 the exhaust seats re-done and they kept my rocker studs and guide plates, I wasn't happy.
