What year is your YJ? Technically a V8 swap in the State of Utah is Illegal right now for YJ's. It is NOT illegal to own a YJ that has a V8 in it, however.

For instance, say you bought a YJ from someone in California. It is a legal swap in Cali, and if the swap was done there correctly, you could register it here in Utah and get it passed. The actual work is what is illegal in Utah. The law states that you cannot increase the cubic inches over what came in your vehicle from the factory. I would look for a donor XJ with a 4.0 and swap it's motor If I were you.

its a 1990 and i do need to keep it a street jeep still so i have something to drive. thanks for the info. good to know. any laws on fuel cells inside the back of a jeep? say behind the back seat or in place of the back seat?

You could always do the 4.7 stroker and just not tell anyone ;) ;) . Other than that, I would recomend finding a 91 or newer HO 4.0 to put in there.

maybe i could finger paint a 4.0 on some paper and tape it to the top of the a 454 to throw them off.....

......only problem is finding finger paint..

I think the 5.0 or the 350 are going to be the best bang for the buck. The 4.7 and the 5.3 are going to cost you over $1k just for the motor. You can generally find tbi 350s and SEFI 5.0s for around $500. And theres plenty of aftermarket support for swapping and modding both those motors.
