for the following ultimate tool purchase justification from his sig.

"If you need a tool and don't buy it, you will ultimately find that you have paid for it but don't have it". -Henry Ford

Let's hope "they" don't question the meaning of "need"

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
I wish I only needed half of the tools I own. Anyone need wrenches bigger then 2 inches?

Tell me that quote isn't true:

"If you need a tool and don't buy it, you will ultimately find that you have paid for it but don't have it". -Henry Ford

I stole that signature from someone on Pirate. Once I read it I instantly found the truth in it. I don't know how many flathead screwdrivers I have destroyed when I used them as a chisel. In the end, I more than paid for the chisel, but all I had to show for it was a bunch of busted flatheads. Tools are one of those thing that will always have REAL, PRACTICAL value, no matter what our currency is worth. Now, the definition of "need" can be a slippery slope. :D

Ah the curse of the "if I only had". I've turned to keeping a different tool bag in each vehicle and any time I do something that requires additional tools they go in that bag. My weakness is organization, I keep telling myself I need to make a tool roll for my wrenches but instead they float around in my bag and I end up buying multiples because I can't find something.

Just a side note, I've also decided I base if I like a manufacturer largely on how easy it is to work on something. I could strip 90% of the parts of my old Tacoma with 4 or 5 sizes (10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, possibly a 22mm), to pull an equivalent part off my Isuzu I would need to double that number or more.

I am so guilty of this. I'll buy extra sockets, knowing I used to have some. If I had a better inventory/organization for my tools, that'd save me a lot of money. I've definitely learned which tools are most valuable to me:
- metric deep-impact sockets
- swivel ratcheting box end wrenches
- your basic $20 metric socket kit

I searched for years for a framing hammer that I knew I still had. I finally found it when we moved last. It was in the attic under a box...

I worked out of a small Craftsman roll around for years, but also had lots of misc. tools in smaller tool boxes. I got a new 42" rolling box at Harbor Freight, thinking I could consolidate down to that one box. Nope. But at least I don't need those smaller boxes for frequently used tools. I have a decent tool bag I keep in my Jeep, along with a reasonable socket set. Same in my truck, but not as complete. Tools aren't cheap, but deals are out there. I've been spending more at Lowes on Kobalt lately. But Sears has Craftsman stuff on sale now and again. Even some of their stuff has gone China and Taiwan though.

Organizing sockets is a pain and I'm still looking for a better way...

I have one big bag, affectionately known as my purse, that has all my hand tools. It's one heavy SOB but all my sockets are organized on strips, all my pliers are tucked into the side pockets, I know where everything is. Very rarely do I not have something I need. On the longer trips where I know I'll be hours away from a real road, I bring a five gallon bucket that has a few spare parts, a pickle fork, 2.5lb sledge, map torch, c-clamps, and some fluids. I also have another bag with my air tools and big sockets. 99% of the time I'm supplying the tools to others.

haha this is great. just a couple days ago I was gathering my tools together and organizing and the wife comes out and wants me to throw out all duplicates saying I have too many tools and I dont need duplicates of things. CRAZY!! Most of my stuff is harbor frieght so ofcourse I need duplicates for when others fail.

I have to admit. Buying my Matco tool box was one of the best decisions I ever made, everything is organized and in its rightful place
