Expedition Utah Quarterly Trail Ride: Transcontinental Railroad Documentation Project

What: Transcontinental Railroad Documentation Project
When: September 8th at 8:00am
Where: The old transcontinental railroad (TCRR) grade from the Golden Spike National Historic Site to the ghost town of Lucin.
Who: Anyone interested in helping to document historic sites along the old TCRR.
Details:
One of Expedition Utah’s missions is to document Utah’s backcountry and historical sites. So we are embarking upon the project of compiling data regarding the original transcontinental railroad grade. Along this approximately 90 mile grade are many old ghost towns, sidings, railroad trestles and bridges in addition to other points of interest such as Red Hill. We would like to document each of these sites with photographs and GPS coordinates.
To accomplish this we are looking for volunteers to help us. We will be meeting at the Golden Spike National Historic Site[Map] on Saturday, September 8th at 8am. From there we will break into two teams, the first dedicated to documenting the ghost towns, sidings and “other” points, and the second dedicated to documenting the trestles and bridges. Both teams will also take time to document road conditions such as washouts or other dangers. Each team will need someone with a GPS to mark the sites, and several people with cameras. Plan on this trip taking most of the day. The trail itself isn’t challenging, but we will be going slowly to make sure we don’t miss anything and taking time at each spot to get as many photo’s as we can.
After the trip we will collect all the photos and GPS data and compile it to update the TCRR page on Expedition Utah.
So if this interests you (and we hope it does!) please post up that you want to come along!

very cool, that'll be a great opportunity. I'll be out of state on that date, but I look forward to the report.

Thanks to Ron (ret32) who donated an awesome BLM Monograph of their 1981 survey of the TCRR. This is going to be very helpful as we stike out and survey this route. We really need volunteers to make this project a success, who else is able to come out on Saturday the 8th?

If my leave gets cancelled and I can't make the rubicon this will be my back up. Still hopeful for the rubicon but this would be an awesome trip as well.

If I am able to come I will try for sure!

I do not have a GPG, but I have a ok camera to at least snap some pic!

Great! We need more cameras that GPS's anyway. Hope you can make it!

Well I hope you can make the Rubicon, but this is a solid backup.

It's less-likely each day that I am going since the amount of fuel required for this mission is greater than the amount of fuel in my account. I blame government.

Great! I'll add you to the list.

I have never been to rozel point. Is it easy to find and get too if I can make it Friday to camp with you?

It's not too bad. Once you get to the Golden Spike National Historic Site there are signs that guide you to the Spiral Jetty, which is Rozel Point. I'd offer to have everyone meet at Golden Spike, but I'm not 100% sure when I'll be there.

Here is a Google map for the route.
