Anyone intrested in putting in some Lock Rights in some Samurai 3rd's?.
I'm not sure what I'm doing when it comes to 3rd's and diffs. If anyone's intrested or knows a good shop to have them done I would appericate it, Thanx.

Installing Lock Rights is actually pretty easy, you don't need to worry about resetting your gears.

All you need to do is pull your third members, pull the carrier out, mark a location on the ring gear and the carrier, pull the ring gear off and remove the spider gears. Install the lock right in order as per the instructions and put it all back together.

Plus it's a good opportunity to see what's going on inside of those thirds.

Its a good reason to do it yourself and learn about your axles.

Whats your location, someone might be nearby to offer pointers?

Yes and no....Samurai third members use carrier bearing adjuster nuts, so you do have to reset backlash and carrier bearing preload when putting it all back together. (for those who may not know, an axle that uses shims to set the carrier position/preload can just be reinstalled with the shims in the same spots, no need to re-adjust)

Hey, wait a minute.... It's been a while since I've messed with a pop-rite, but do you even need to pull the carrier assembly out of the third member?

Absolutely, yes. The Sammy third has a two-piece, bolt-together carrier that has to come apart. It's a 4-pinion spider.

I started thinking about that as I typed... figuring a Sami third would be similar to a Toy or Ford 9" in that aspect. At least it's still easy to re-set the backlash and pre-load, as long as you know where it needs to be. :D
