Family Reunion at Fish Lake, What Would You Do?

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
So I just went in to ask if I could go to the Quarterly Training and found out that's the weekend of our family reunion at Fish Lake. I didn't even know where that was. So I looked it up and found out it's pretty close to a lot of cool area I've been wanting to explore. So we are heading down there on the 18th and staying through the 20th. We will have most of the day for free time. We have never been in this area before.

So my question is, what would you do/explore/see if your base camp was Fish Lake? Sounds like the rest of our family will be renting boats and such. We'll be in the jeep which doesn't float very well.

So I'll guess and say I'll have all day friday to go exploring with my wife and three young kids. Are there any dinosaur remains close by or maybe some cool rock drawings? Or maybe just a really pretty drive close by?

I have no experience in this part of Utah, so any driving directions would be great to add as well, or maybe links to trip reports with directions.

Thanks,
Josh.

I recommend you get a benchmark atlas. It shows all the dirt roads in the area that you can explore. You can't get lost with one of those maps.

I have always wanted to explore Capital Reef and I know it's close. What's the one trail you would hit if you had a day there? Or the best way to spend 4 or 5 hours there? Keep in mind, we will most likely be by ourselves, so I don't want to get to far into them middle of nowhere.

I have never heard of Gooseberry Rd. Are there specific things to see or do, or is it more of just a nice ride?

There's a great dirt road that goes from the North- East tip of Capitol Reef on down south on the east side. It's in the Benchmark Atlas. Fantastic drive. I'll post some pics in a sec.

1/4 mile hike from the road:

just like how the wells book is almost a requirement for anyone going to Moab, the Benchmark Atlas is a requirement for anyone doing backcountry travel. It really is that good. Pick the area you want to explore, then find the dirt roads on the atlas. It even marks ruins, historical points of interest, etc.

It's more of a nice ride, It takes you by some smaller lakes/ponds. I've done it in a mini-van so don't expect hard core wheeling.
There is an exit off of I-70 and it drops you by Johnson Valley Reservoir.

My wife is looking for a Benchmark today. We will just have the Jeep. I'd really like to find some stuff that would interest the kids. I'm all for a nice scenic drive, but the kids will tune out pretty quick.
