has anyone had any problems registering there jeeps in salt lake because the tires are not fully covered by the fender flares?

What shops are you taking your rigs to so you can pass inspection?

At emissions plus (or whatever it was called) they said they wouldn't pass it????????????

I have been pulled over before in the jeep and no one said anything about my tires being to wide for the flares.

How much do they stick out?

Not sure anyone will (or should) give you the name of a shop that will pass it. however, you could stop by a few shops and ask them if they "foresee" any problems with it passing.. might get lucky. Otherwise borrow some stocker tires and make it legit.

yea, I did find a shop in my wifes home town that she knew. he passed it but he did warn us that the tires stick out too much.

they only stick out about 2-3 inches.

I was mostly wondering if this is a big issue. I see tons of trucks/jeeps with their tires sticking out as well..... the police don't seem to pull me over and say anything, so why the big stink at the inspection station???

just so you all know it's the uhp you have too watch out for. And yes i would put some fender flares on. The utah highway patrol is starting to crack down on safety items. As of right now any part of the tire must be covered by a fender/flare and mud flaps. And if you dont they have been knowen too inpound vehicles that are caught.

no 50% of the tire must be covered...going by what you say a brand new totally stock powerstroke is illegal...the tires are no where near covered in the back...

I had extened flares on my Yj with 6" lift and 35s and my tires stuck out pretty good and I never had mud flaps on and I never got hassled...I think if they see you are trying somewhat then they usually dont bother you...

no that's for the rear of the tire (mudflaps) the mud flaps are what need too cover the upper 50% of the tire. And yes there are a lot of vehicles that are excempt from this. But these are from the factory set-ups. Hell you can buy a truck that doesn't have a rear bumper. But that doesn't meen that you dont need it. We are talking about changing from stock tire to larger and wider tire. This is when the use of mudflaps and fender flares are required. And as of right now the upper part of your tire must be covered by something. It doesnt say what just something.
So dont make me get the utah state safety book out just to prove you wrong. :p

Also I would like to know who passed that yj for you? becuse it should of never been on the roadway. And thanks for cracking my windshield with those mud slingers.

K-so the mudflaps you are right but I cant find anywhere about the flares...I know its there but I cant find it...

and about my YJ...it was totally legal and so what if I flipped a few rocks...every other car on the road does too...I always made sure there was no mud from the trail on it so I wouldn;t call it a mud slinger(mud sucks)...your welcome for the cracked windshield...:D:D:D

It all depends on what book you are looking in. I have a 1997 book, it's the only one I have at the house. On page 1-10-1 under section C. FENDERS
"Check for the removal or alteration of front or rear fenders.
REJECT vehicle when:

Any fender has been removed, or altered to such extent that it does not cover the entire width and upper 50% of the tire." Then it goes on to say "No aftermarket fender of flexible fender extender may not exceed three inches." But the last part has been removed by a update not to long ago. Now you can go as wide as you like. As long as the tires are covered as state above.
And as for your YJ goes if the tires and or suspension was changed it would of needed both flares and mud flaps to be "totally legal",your own words.

I'm just looking on-line so it doesn;t have page numbers:D...when I went in for inspection I was totally legal;)...IF I was by chance muddy I put the flaps on...I'm not an ass and I have respect for others on the road, I was never hassled...but instead of worring about crappy laws I just decided to build it stictly for off-road use now:D:p

thats cool...I am always willing to learn and accept my mistakes, and learn from them, its always good to have guys that are into this stuff around...one thing I might suggest is to drop the 'holier than thou' attitude... most UHP, IMO, are immature and think they rule the world...not saying you think that but its a stereotype I am sure you run into...good talkin...:D:D:D
