Fender flares & registration?

Any fender has been removed, or altered to such extent that it does not cover the entire width and upper 50% of the tire." Then it goes on to say "No aftermarket fender of flexible fender extender may not exceed three inches." But the last part has been removed by a update not to long ago. Now you can go as wide as you like. As long as the tires are covered as state above....

You'll also find that you may not extend the wheel track more than six inches wider than stock. So, having unlimited fender flares is moot. Take off your stock backspaced wheels throw on your favorite steelies and add some taller/wider tires, let alone full width axles, and you instantly become illegal. It is a catch-22. I'll bet any of you dollars to dimes, a trip to Uintah County will net you tickets ranging from mudflap violations, to fender flare violations regardless of the lift or lowering of your vehicle. Don't believe for a second that the UHP isn't completely informed on the changes in the laws. They'll print you a copy right out of their squad car if you don't already have one. BTW, Duschesne officers cited me for a mudflap that was not mounted perfectly square to the tire. (mounting screw fell out) Lesson.....Stay out of Uintah County or break out the check book.

how can there be exempt vehicles and be fair across the board?

Pretty much every truck/suv that leaves the lot is in violation of the mudflap law.

The broken windshield crap:rolleyes: Give me a break. I have never (NEVER) gotten and chip or break from some mudslinger. They have all been your common everyday commuter vehicle. It is the tight tread pattern that keeps the little rocks in the tread an then launches them.

If my swampers threw a rock, your windshield should be the last of your worries. As it probably is not a pebble:D

Funny, tell that to all the people that get pulled over for illegal lifts... just to get out, measure it with the cop, SHOW them the new law... and be on there way. I can think of a few UHP that don't know the new lift laws.

Also I would like to know who passed that yj for you? becuse it should of never been on the roadway. And thanks for cracking my windshield with those mud slingers. [/B][/QUOTE]

I'd like to know why this bothers you so much. I think you are on the wrong board. Anal people like you are why there are so many stupid and counterproductive laws in that book. I recently went to Jiffy lube to get a truck inspected and they made me buy flaps and duct tape them on. It has been on the road 15 years and 150000 miles with the same tire size and ride hight(3" lift on a 1/2 ton with 33s, it sits lower than my stock 1ton)and it has never been questioned. What makes me really mad is that all the employees trucks were parked to the side and everyone of them was lifted and none of them had flaps.

Haven't you ever played stupid with a cop?

"Boy, Where's the fire? Do you know the speed limit is 55MPH?"

"Oh, sorry officer. I did not know that......."

The UHP officer with whom I debated the lift law in Uintah County, showed me up by giving me the new lift law straight off of his computer in the car. He said every officer had this information. Given that, I would say, they are playing stupid to get more tickets written. If there was a chance that you or I might not fight the ticket and pay in full, then absolutely I believe they will write a BS ticket banking on our apathy.

I guess I have been lucky but every time I have ever been pulled over for speeding in my jeep I have always gotten compliments on the Jeep and a warning on the speeding. I have never been hassled for tires or anything safety ever. I think that most cops and UHP are cool, but I am sure there are those that are on a power trip.

bobdog, you have a great looking CJ. There is nobody on this planet that could complain about your lift or tires. I think, though, the reason you get more compliments than complaints, is because it is very unassuming in appearence. You are not lifted to the sky, you don't run huge tires past the body and the tread on the tires is conservative. These are all of the things I thought I had with my XJ, but there is one UHP'r that seamed to have a problem with me and my Jeep. Speed, cracked windshield, too wide tires, and inadequate mudflaps and I had to pass this trooper several times a week. I knew he would pull me over, just as he knew I would never fix these problems. I live in denial of the laws that bind me, mostly because I don't believe that my junk is all that offensive. It's conservative yet capable, but I guess that's just my opinion.

True but I built it in 1990 and it's apearance has not changed much. At the time 35s on a CJ were rare and it did draw attention to it's self.

I agree 100%...my wife got nailed by a rock flipped by a semi while she was driving over parley summit...it totally shattered her passenger windshield, it caused her to flinch(isn't that strange:rolleyes: ) and when she did so she pulled the steering wheel and ended up in the median at 75mph...started to spin and ended up passing me (I was infront of her) and the UHP gave her a ticket for failuer to maintain control of her vehicle and gave her a ticket for taking out one of the marker posts...the cop was a looser, she went to court about it and the judge couldn't believe he gave her a ticket so she dropped it...

look here though for the exception...basically it says if it comes from the manufacture that way then its ok...pretty gay IMO, what make it any safer then my jeep???

whoa, Holy S*it that whole rock/ who passed stuff was a joke. And yes I think the whole safety program is gay too. The inspections are unfair to the general public. If you all are so upset with this then call your congress man. They are the ones that in the end set the laws. Not too long ago they were the ones that changed the lift laws based on public input.

And for all of your conplants about Inspections stations being too picky. Just keep in mind that they are also being watched buy the UHP. But the difference is that if the inspection station is caught for infractions they will be shut down.
About the wheel track law. They sent out an update not too long ago changing this. The law is now as long as you have mud flaps, fender flares, and bumpers that extend the whole wheel track it passes.

Hope this helps -- It means I've gotta add three inches to my 6-inch fender flares in order to make my full-width axles compliant

From Utah State House Bill 49 Enrolled 2001:

"If the wheel track is increased beyond the O.E.M. specification, the top 50% of the tires shall be covered by the original fenders, by rubber, or other flexible fender extenders under any loading condition."

"Wheel covers, mudguards, flaps, or splash aprons are not required if the motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer is designed and constructed so that the requirements of Subsection (1) are accomplished by means of fenders, body construction, or other means of enclosure."

"Wheel covers, mudguards, flaps, or splash aprons are not required on a vehicle operated or driven during fair weather on well-maintained, hard-surfaced roads if the motor vehicle:
(a) was made in America prior to 1935;
(b) is registered as a vintage vehicle; or
(c) is a replica vehicle as defined under Section 41-6-155.5 .
(5) Except as provided in Subsection (4), rear wheels not covered at the top by fenders, bodies,
or other parts of the vehicle shall be covered at the top by protective means extending rearward at least
to the center line of the rearmost axle."
