I just saw that SLC has banned fireworks? WTF? We just moved to Spokane and after spending $140 in IF (on the IF wheelin' trip) we found that they are completely illegal here (everything, including sparklers).

Said it before, but I'll say it again, WTF????!!

WTF? How about this:

UTAH IS ON FIRE! HOT, SPARKING THINGS ARE NOT SMART RIGHT NOW!

My neighbors nearly had their house burnt down on the 4th, thanks to out-of-state visitors disregarding the very wise ban on flying fireworks. Bottle rocket shot over the roof into the backyard, igniting the field behind the house. Lucky for them, her neighbors and I were there to get it under control.

While I can appreciate the opposition to the ban from the fireworks company and those who don't like their "freedoms" taken away (I say "freedoms" because I've never run across "lighting fireworks" in the list of rights that get strict, or even intermediate scrutiny/protection), desperate times call for desperate measures.

For WA state it's not just this year, it's on going.

If UT is only doing for fire control, then I can understand that logic to a point. What about the smaller, safe and sane ones?

I'll be honest. I've never known what fireworks were considered legal or illegal in UT. I've seen everything from safe and sane, ground works, to things that shoot in the air and go bang.

So are the off the ground and explosion type typically legal in UT? Or is it safe and sane only, and those others are brought in from WY or other places? If so, then the guy used a typically illegal firework to light your neighbors house up and an exception to the rule. I'm more pissed about the safe and sane stuff being illegal - you know, stuff that does not leave the ground and does not explode.

My son can not even use those little white q tip looking things here that you toss on the ground and go bang.

So you guys are hurting for rain? You can have some of ours :D

Typically anything that leaves the ground is illegal in UT. (bottle rockets, roman candles, etc are all illegal) As is anything that just goes boom (firecrackers, m80s)

I've had 2 fires in the field behind my house this year. My neighbors typically would go to WY for fireworks but this year they haven't even played with sparklers.

As far as a total ban it depends on your city.

So if they have been illegal in years past, then they are still illegal and being used by some. The ban on fire works will only keep the law abiding citizen (that does practice safe use and doesn't use illegal and dangerous fireworks) from using them. The ones that have been using illegal works in the past, will continue to use them. I'm surprised your neighbor didn't keep going as I'm sure he knew they were illegal last year.

Banning fireworks is like banning guns - all fireworks cause fires just like all guns cause murders and crime. I know this is dramatic, but it is the same thinking and it's BS.:mad2:

They need to step up patrol and catch the offenders and give them stiffer penalties for breaking the law. That way the common, law abiding citizen can still celebrate with safe, legal, works.

Isn't WA like wet or something?

I have never thought that fireworks were a good idea in UT. I think they should only be allowed in the winter months.

I don't think so.... I've usually had my hands on some good size motar shells in the past, but this year we all veto'ed that idea. In fact my FIL tossed some of the illegals he had from last year, not worth the risk. Last year you could sit on the east bench of Sandy and watch hundereds of giant fireworks going off all over the area, there was noticeable less this year even before the ban. Its one thing to light off a couple illegal fireworks when every other house is lighting fireworks... its another thing to be doing it when your the only one out on the streets ;)

The firestation just down the road from my house has a huge banner out front... "$500 fine for illegal fireworks" I think they are taking it alot more serious given the fire danger this year.

Illegal fireworks are a big thing in my neighborhood. Every year for the entire month of July through half of August they go off every night and day. I find the spent ones on my roof and vehichles all the time. It really is starting to piss me off. There is no enforcement and calling the cops or the fire dept has never resulted in a cop even driving down the street. By the time Fall rolls around me and my dogs are a nervous wreck. If you like them there is no need to fight the crowds at Liberty park just come sit on my front lawn.

I don't see what the big deal is, if you want to blow stuff up there is better ways to do it and cheaper:greg:

We were driving home on the 4th, and we were treated to an eerily beautiful juxtaposition of illegal fireworks against a small flare-up (fire) from the big fire just south of Dell Canyon.
The irony was great . . . these fireworks were right against the mountain (same area that was just burned), but there were illegal fireworks going off all over the valley.

It is yet another example of the problem with Utah: everyone believes that they are the exception to the rule (cutting ahead in traffic, watering lawns during the day, fireworks, building your house in the mountains and complaining about deer and/or vanishing habitat, etc . . .)

There is no such thing as a law abiding citizen.

Not true... They are all illegal here, and even though I had just spent $120 on safe and sane ones in Idaho Falls the weeken prior, they are still sitting here unlit. ...And I am a citizen. ;)

Next year we will drive the 10 miles to Idaho and lite them off. I guess everything over there is flame retarded, or just everyone over here is retarded.

I hear what your saying. I just figure that they are already doing this illegaly, now all fireworks are illegal. So what's stopping them from still lighting off illegal fireworks? They obviously had no concern for the law before, what changed?

In Sandy they had police all over chasing down fireworks. Last July my BIL (grizzly_tom) had a fire marshall pull around the corner just after he lit his first motor... the back of the guys car was chuck full of illegal fireworks  They logged the address, and took his name... said if they come back ever they will issue a citation. Sure enough this spring he decided to play with a roman candle... after lighting the neighbors weeds on fire... he got a citation
