On a side note, I think this country being formed had alot more to do with taxation with out representation more than the religion thing.

And GBH's "official" capacity was what?

just a thought... but, the LDS church is huge into service and aid all over the world.. my grandparents were ambassdors for the church to the pentagon a few years ago

i watched first hand the 30 minute response time the church had in FL after the first of series of hurricanes, Hur. Charly..

I think there are good examples of great things that GBH had a hand in...

just a thought :) i'm not justifying in any way.. just thinkin outloud..

Wrong. And there were other reasons for the founding of our country other than the freedom of religion, which is an interpretation in and of itself.

.

founded on the belief of God, or not... true, the choice is there.. which is the foundation of the US... choice

All good things done out of the kindness of his heart, NOT in an "official" capacity.

wow...this got picked up and carried pretty far. Guess there are a lot of people with some pent up aggression. Sounds to me like it needs to warm up a bit so we can all go out wheeling!!!

I figured it would be a valid, but touchy subject.

I do appreciate the fact that it's staying civilized!

ya. it's this little thing called the 1st amendment ;)

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

but the specific term "seperation of church and state" was derived in several prominant supreme court rulings since then-as TRNDRVR mentioned.

I'm off for a bit ladies. Play nice while I'm away...

Thats about as logical as having the U4WDA board being made up strictly of SUWA members....or putting Ted Nugent in charge of the Anti-gun lobby.....or putting a baseball player in a situation that requires athletic ability....or, well you get the point.
Cody, you're hilarious!

Nah, I'm interested in the thread as well, caught my attention. I drove down state street in Orem today and saw the flag at half mast, It took me a few blocks for it to get into my skull that, "Oh, It's for President Hinkley!" I've always been curious about the flag rules. If there was a special website that had these rules that everyone followed and got their dates n' stuff. Don't be shocked TRNDRVR I (being devout LDS) was puzzled too. But something also to note GBHs' influence is GLOBAL.

Seems pretty clear to me...from two different sources:

Colonialflag.com said:
The flag should be flown at half-staff when important government officials or state governors have died, or when mourning a national tragedy. Only the President and state governors can decide when and how long the flag should be flown at half-staff.

Wikipedia said:
Governors of the several U.S. states or territories are authorized by federal law to order all U.S. and state flags in their jurisdiction flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for a state official or resident who has died. Since a governor's executive order affects only his or her state, not the entire country, these orders are distinguished from presidential proclamations.

There wasn't a nationwide proclamation, but Gov. Huntsman did authorize it for his jurisdiction.

Who made USflags.org the sole decision maker in this world? Its some dudes personal website, far from official IMO. His interpretation is just that, and interpretation...

I just did a quick google search (worth a try for some of you that think USflags.org is the only source for flag info on the www ;))... All of the links I came up with say that Gov. Huntsmans actions were not only legal, but they were very appropriate too.

Wikipedia.com, answers.yahoo.com, GettysburgFlag.com, etc... Check them out for yourself.

Talk about getting all worked up over the interpretation from a SINGLE source ;)

For example alcahol. Why a board of people who don't drink nor ever have is expected to manage it's sale and distrubution is a mystery to me. If we can't speak our minds then the other part of our founding principles have been lost.

I get the point but it is pretty lame too. That complaint is just another way to complain about the majority. I agree that there are some strange laws but whould you rahter have some strange hoops to jump through or would you rather have a DRY county or city? I bet all of those DRY areas through out the country would rather be in your shoes.

What is the significance of displaying the flag at half-staff?

This gesture is a sign to indicate the nation mourns the death of an individual(s), such as death of the President or former President, Vice President, Supreme Court Justice, member of Congress, Secretary of an executive or military department, etc. Only the President of the United States or the Governor of the State may order the flag to be half-staffed. The honor and reverence accorded this solemn act is quickly becoming eroded by those individuals and agencies that display the flag at half-staff on inappropriate occasions without proper authority to do so.
I can google too.

Let me help you out with that.

All that what you highlighted is saying is that people are flying it at half staff without the proper authorization. (which I agree is done all too often, infact my company was going to do it for one of our co-workers that had passed away until I corrected them) The Governor (by your own quote) has the proper authorization.
