Where can I get one? Is it illegal to shoot one if its not an emergency? I remember one at fyto last year and I thought it was pretty cool to see one in real life. What's the scoop?

Boating/camping places will often have the single use or 3-shot type of flare guns, but I'll echo Bryson that your likely to only find the high-end flare guns (that can shoot infinite flares) at a gun show and as of recent I haven't seen the regular supplier at the shows? I've purchased a half dozen HK models from him over the years and brought twice that to him in business, he also sells the 26.5mm ammo required to use in them. It might be worth calling around to local gun shops to see if any of them keep them around, they are all military surplus so they theoretical could have access to them through CAI or some of the other surplus wholesale dealers. As far as whether or not its legal, I'd like to see a law that says it is not. That said if/when you do fire it off and the SAR calvary comes looking for you, be prepared to cover the bill :D

Are the Cabelas ones metal barrel? Any chance they sell the 26.5mm flare rounds? Running low and I could get lost soon, can't seen to find any flares on Cabelas site.

I didn't look at them that close Kurt, I saw them at a distance and took a note that they stocked them. That was it... sorry!

Those are hobby flare guns :D

If you want mortar shell firework action, invest in the HK or other 26.5 calibers. With the metal barrels you can 12 gauge mini-rounds :D

Here is the type I have:

That said, those plastic ones have a lifetime warranty, obviously I wouldn't shoot a 12 gauge round through them but if the flare refills are available for them, why not?
