Bakon?

Is that what bacon turns into after you store it for 20 years?

Several non-wheeler neighbors have asked me what I'm building in my garage.
One of my typical responses is "an escape pod for when the zombies come"...

Be prepared, the zombies aren't gonna kill themselves.

I know there are plenty in Utah that store food but I am not planning for the end of the world so I would never have use for something like that.

Here's how the zompacolypse will turn out for must of us in reality..

1. Wake up, angrily turn off alarm clock.
2. Stumble to bathroom, shower, brush teeth, forget pants (approx 20 mins)
3. Make coffee and an english muffin.
4. Eat breakfast, flip through channels, put on pants (15 mins)
5. Realize no channels are broadcasting anything, be confused
6. Make note to contact cable provider, smoke bowl
7. **** pants as window shatters and a snarling, growling, bloody person bursts through it
8. Scream like a girl as the zombie bounds across the dining room before I can get up from kitchen table (2.1 seconds)
9. Get throat ripped out, gurgle in own blood, Die. (Approx 25 seconds)

This is just a basic outline though, Steps 2 and 4 may differe depending on the amount of booze consumed the night before.

I actually never did act on food storage, but I've been thinking more about it recently. What are you guys putting together? What works well for someone who doesn't want to buy bulk and keep on top of everything being rotated?

I need food... A good stove... Lots of fuel for said stove... Dutch oven gear? And finally do a vegetable garden...

I'd like to have a 3 month supply.

Back to your original post, my brother gave each one of his kids' families one of those Costco buckets for Christmas one year. They weren't thrilled, but they each still have them in their pantries.

One idea for a possible 'best' mode of transportation would be by rail. Two locomotives and around 2-3 cars would be ideal (I could break it down more if you want)

Far from 'best' imo. Trains are extremely easy to derail, tracks will be congested, you won't have access to switching without exiting your platform, rail police will still be on the job even during the zombpocolypse ;) Railyards are already full of hobo gangs, their will multiply in numbers exponentially :D

There are plenty of people that after Katrina, some interesting tsunamis, earthquakes in Haiti ect that would have loved to have had a few weeks of food to get they by until things straightened out.. end of the world is not really needed to have a source of food to rely on.. did you know that Utah has some nice fault lines that could cause some major earthquakes.. would be nice to have food and water on hand just in case cuzz your not getting any from me :)

X2, Katrina hits the south east and bottled water was selling out in Utah, an event that affextwd less than 1% of the population. Imagine when its 10 or 20%

I've decided that the 'Overland Train' would be sweet..

are these tubs at costco much bigger than a 5 gal bucket? Sounds like good insurance. I need a few of those blue water tanks. ANd more guns. Always need more guns...

Those buckets are about 5 gallon size. They are basically just add water soup mix. They taste okay. I think I good way to start is with rice and beans in buckets. If properly done the rice will store indefinitely. You can build from that. It isn't the ultimate but it is cheap and full of calories. Add to it as you see fit.

Come on over and jami and I can show you our system. We are up to about 2 years worth of preps. With only a small percentage still being rice and beans, but that is where we started.

I'm not religious, paranoid (that I know of :ugh:), planning on the world ending soon or anything like that, I just think food storage is common sense. Lets say Utah does have their destined "huge earthquake" or other disaster in the middle of winter and your water, power and natural gas are off. You don't have food storage or a means to keep your house (if it hasn't been destroyed) warm. Your unprepared friends, neighbors and relatives are now closer than ever. That would totally suck especially if you have kids and/or family with medical conditions (i.e. diabetes etc.) :-\

My boss and I were discussing this the other day and surprisingly it turns out there are quite a few people at my work that want to get a food storage etc. plan together and don't know where to start. Most of it started when Joplin Missouri was leveled this summer (we have a plant about five miles away) by a tornado and many of our employees suffered major loss.

Anyway the only thing I can recommend is turn off your power, gas, water and don't go to the grocery store or gas station for one week. You'll have a good idea or what you need after a day or two :D

Fake emergency is a great way to learn what you need. We have done this a few times and no amount of planning can take the place of the real (fake) thing. My mom was really glad we had the 12 volt fridge when it came time to store her insulin and her shot for her M.S.

As to whether or not this kit is a good buy... its absolutely better than nothing right. So if your not going to seek out other solutions (Utah has dozens of place that sell volume emergency food stores) yet you are content in the decision to have food storage. Buy it. If you want to investigate better options, visit one of the many places in Utah that specialize in that or use your religious connections to go can/pack your own. My mother gives my brothers and I a case or two of canned xyz for Christmas and holidays. We stockpile it in the basement and hope to never need it. My wife and I really need to get a plan in place...
