A friend has a Bryant furnace, model 383KAV. Last week it has only come on intermittently, but the past 2 nights it has not kicked on at all. I have not seen it yet, but I assume rather than a pilot light it just has something to spark on demand. Anyone know if that sounds right or what it takes to get it fixed?

Mine had the element that lights it go out last year. When I powered it off and then back on and the temperature was set so the furnace would kick on it would run the fan for a minute kick on the gas and then when it wouldn't light it would shut off and wouldn't attempt to start again. I found that I could put one of those long handled lighters in there at the right time and the furnace would light and run until the house reached temperature and then it would shut off and when I got cold I had to repeat the process. My brother-in-law does HVAC and got me the part that lights it ($26) and it's worked great since.

When my furnace kicks on I can see the element glow prior to the gas flowing if that helps you troubleshoot.

Have to see it to tell but some of the common things are-as stated-the ignitor (should glow red if working), and the exhaust fan (the small fan that blows the combustion by-products up to the roof).

thanks for the input. The owner found some check list of things to check. I am not sure all that was involved, but it got a new filter, power-off/reset, and cleaned some sensor and for now the furnace is working.
