Ford 9" to FF

OK, I broke the stock 31 spline shaft in my 9" in Moab over the weekend, so I'm looking at options. If I stay semi-float, I'll just buy two hardened shafts and keep the good one that I have left as a spare.

What is involved in making it a full floater? Warn has complete kits, but will they work with disc brake conversions? Is it worth it to change it?

I was lucky to be able to limp it out of the trail because of where the shaft broke, I'm thinking that it would be a luxury to be able to freewheel a broken axle out in the future. Thanks in advance for your help.

Same reason I went to FF, not if it breaks but when it breaks :D

Not to hijack, but are the 9" shafts interchangable from Driver to Pass? I assume they are but I am not real familiar with the way the axle is held into position (press on bearing I assume?)

On mine they are, 79' F-150, shafts are the same length. Yes on the bearing deal

I'm sure it's been done. 9" have had everything done to them......I think the question is more of how big of a full float can you fit into the 9" carrier.....you may just need some new side gears with the correct spline count for your locker?

There's something to be said for off-the-shelf parts, though. I'd just get the hardened shafts and carry a spare.

Do a good alloy semi -float set of shafts and be done with it....

The FF is not hard. You can do it with junkyard parts and the weld on caliper mnts. Basically 44 frt spindles/rotor/etc....

OR your could go 35 spline :D New drop in and locker....
Can be done with a stock drop in, but not a very good option due to the small roolers of the bearings you'd have to use.

The Warn kits are pretty nice, they do have a disc kit but you could make your own for less. Why not go to 35 spline? I know it's pricey but worth the peace of mind. Call me if you need any help.

I've been thinking about going 35 spline, but it's gonna be pricey. (Not that Warns FF kit isn't). If I do go 35, am I looking at new R&P also, or just shafts and locker? (And, I assume, bearings and seals)

What's the difference in shaft diameter between 31 and 35 spliners?

I believe its 1.31" vs. 1.5"...why not jump to 40 spline:D wont cost a whole lot more than 35 spline, but you'd be limited to a spool (unless you get into the custom stuff)...do you have an aftermarket third member already or is it a stock unit? as marc mentioned earlier you should get a new one if its a stock piece...even aftermarket may have to be replaced if it doesn;t have the larger side bearings...

When i was building the axle a couple years ago, I just ordered a complete third from Randy's, locker, gears and all, so I don't know if it's any different from stock. I would probably try to sell my third complete, and then order a built unit with the 35 spline setup. Is there anything that needs to be done to the housing for 35s? clearance issues?

My rear end is the "big bearing" that everyone talks about, but I don't know if there is a difference for the larger 35 spline axles.

You have to measure your carrier bearings to know if it is the bigger one. 3.065 is stock, 3.25" is the one for 35/40 spline. No other mods to the housing are needed.

So, even if it is the 3.065, I would need to have it machined to 3.25?

i have a 35spl 1.5" shafted d70 in my storage unit that you could steal spindles off of for a little $
you could even cut down the shafts and use them.
i was considering doing the same to my d4

OK, so I might as well just order a loaded third and try to sell mine? What do you guys think of Yukons' hardened shafts?
