I'm looking at buying a 2012 Ford fiesta hatchback
The pro's
33-40 mpg
Great safety ratings
14,100 msrp for the car
Warranty
Con's
It's a Ford
I hate buying from dealers
I hate buying new

The price + mpg+ safety can't be beat, and used cars in the same range cost around the same.

What does Rme4x4 think?

are you considering buying new from a dealer?

I have a buddy with a fiesta, and he likes it. Ford has really stepped their game up lately. I'd totally drive a fiesta. I still think it was a stupid decision for Ford not to import the quick ones to the US. They would have sold a bunch of those, especially if they had a Ken Block edition.

I actually just went through this same discission in Nov. I was looking at a Fiesta and an Escort. My daughter was due for a new car so her and I went and drove every car those sizes and I mean everyone of them. I have bought Fords for the last 15 years except for my Wranglers. I was leaning towards Ford because Ed Kenely always gave me a great deal but I was buying a new Expedition and truck every other year. My daughter liked the size of the Focus which is understandable and I figured the additional MPG really wasnt significant enough to worry about it and the cost difference wasnt too much either.

Long storey short, she ended up with a Chevy Cruz and she absolutely loves it. I got her the RS model and I took it to St George a few weeks ago and was really impressed with the power(4 cyl turbo), ride, quietness and handling. I averaged about 78 MPH and got 36 MPG. Not too bad and she loves it.

I've been looking around in this exact genre of cars, and i've got my sights set on the 2012 Optima.. I never thought I'd be into a Kia, other than the earlier Sorentos which were badass little boxed frame V6 4x4's that ran away with the Dakar rally... I digress.. The Optimas are by far the best looking hybrid spirited sedan available in the US today. I believe it's a few thousand above the Fiesta, but damn it they are fully loaded with goodies for their price.. Heated steering wheel, bluetooth conectivity, good looks, and 40+mpg's....

The Fiesta is a killer little car now days. I heard Ken Block say on a podcast that they are releasing a sportier version soon, including rollcage.

I would steer clear of Kia, they can be difficult to source parts for. I would look at a Hyundai over a Kia. Hyundai makes a solid, inexpensive car these days.

My bro picke up a clean Hyundai Sonata and loves it... Just, the Kia looks so good.. And 40+mpg.. I'm paid by the mile!! I see dollar signs when others are cursing the price at the pump. :)

Aren't kias built by Hyundai? I know Hyundai owns Kia, just not sure if they're manufactured at the same places (like honda/accura, toyota/lexus, vw/audi, etc)

Don't buy a Toyota Yaris. The corolla gets The same mpg and is way nicer. I drove a corolla from PG to Boise for six months and always got 38+ mpg cruising at 75-80.

I liked the Optima but my daughter didnt want to drive one. She didnt drive the Optima or the Corolla. She drove the Civic, Accord, Cruz, Escort, Fiest, Sentra, Elantra, Sonata, Camry, Impreza and Legacy. When she drove the Cruz, nothing else compared for her. That was the car she wanted.

The Optimas are good looking and loaded for the price. KIA and Hyundai sales are up a ton. They have a nice car. The thing that turned us off on the Hyundai Elantra was how noisy it was on the road. The Sonata was noisier than the Cruz she got. The Escort was nice but early reports on the transmission were not too good and it only has a 36K mile warranty which was the least of the bunch. If your going to keep the car for a while, you have to consider that. Kia and Hyundai are the most with Chevy coming next, Ford, Toyota, Nissan and Honda were last.

Haven't been a huge fan of kias. Like Hickey said, lots of parts are a week out. We did rent a yaris a couple months back. We got 38-39 mixed city and highway over 4 days. Power wasn't that great, but adequate.

fiat.jpgWhat about a Fiat 500. In the 60's I had a 124 that would run circles around everything at a slalom. Gas mileage is good and they run all the way from about $14k to $23K and if you get an Abarth they are hot.

This weekend I test drove: Chevy sonic, Chevy aveo, Mazda 2, Toyota yaris, and many others....
The Ford fiesta felt like the most solid car.
I just need to find someone to order in the package option I want. I found out that if I go to barber brothers in Morgan taxes will only be 5.95% instead of 6.5%. So I am headed up there tomorrow.
