foriegn tapping sound...

I've just recently picked up a very strange tapping noise when i'm in a forward gear, generally appears in the torque band in each gear. with my window down it sounds like it's coming from just behind me, d-line, exhaust/exhaust heat guards, so on... it doesn't sound very internal though; more of an external tapping. though with the tapping showing up only when going forward, it makes me think it's mechanical... but i cannot pin-point it for the life of me... any ideas?

on a side note, not sure if this would be related... the oil pressure at idle has dropped in the last day or two...

Could be related. Who knows. Send it back to Japp-an and see if they can diagnose it.

I thought I already told you there's a fix to these types of problems. It's called the volume dial.

i think it might be the output bearing on my rear t-case... i pulled the d-line off the flange to make sure the nut was still intact, and it is...

anyone know how long i can drive on a shot output bearing?

How do you know it's foreign? Does it have an accent?

In my (extensive) u-joint failure exprience, they squeek when they fail (or are about to fail). I don't know that I've ever heard one "tap". I've had several engines that made tapping noises though. Some turned out bad, others didn't. Make sure the oil is full. ;)

thanks Braden.. i have to keep a close eye on this engine when it comes to oil.. so that's usually never too low.

i just talked to Carl, who thinks it might even be the cage around the output bearing... i'm hopefully going to dig into it this week to see what's going on with it.

don't you always have a squeeky driveshaft though Braden?:greg:

Not any more. Haven't had a squeek since I switched to Toy u-joints. :greg:

Your first post says it's in your "power band" and in all gears. That to my feble mind would eliminate drivetrain issues, and lead me toward the engine. You dont happen to have a header do you? Sounds like an exhaust leak to me.
