pretty good list. That would be a tough assignment. gps wouldn't have made my list and goretex woulda been higher. Number one for me would be trees.

Good article, interesting to think about for sure. You did have a typo though

"Of course, where would we be without four-wheel drive, or GPS? How could we survive with the old rain gear that trapped perpiration and got us wetter than if you had just let the rain pour down on us?"

I don't know why but I like to point stuff like that out, but it was a good read and I think I agree with you on 4WD being number one. I've never used a GPS except on the highway. GORE-TEX is some amazing stuff, and what would we do without DEET. I think you nailed it with the Leatherman too, I can't think of a more versatile tool that is light weight enough to carry with you everywhere.

I'd kick GPS out of the top ten. Yea, it is has its place, but lots of fun has been (and for some, like me, continues) to be had with out them.

I'll also venture into blasphame on RME and remove 4wd. I have had too much fun by foot, raft, boat, horse back etc to say it is the most important.

I would put a top list something like this:
rubber. Think about it...boots, rafts, tires and much more all depends on rubber products.
Matches (really one of the most important of survival tools is matches in a water proof container).
Compass. Predates GPS, works without batteries.
Gore-tex & other advances in clothing. Staying warm and dry makes everything more fun
Public Land systems. Where could we go if all the land was private?

Trees. Yes, I could've gone there, trees, oceans, elk. Really, it's tough narrowing it down.

Thanks for catching that TJDukit. I'm going to fix that one just as soon as I'm done posting here.:>)

Propane stove would be there for me.

Nice call. It could've easily made the top five. I thought about backpacking stoves too.

True enough. I had a lot of fun before I got my GPS, that's for sure.

Rubber is great. Matches just as you say. I can't argue with anything on your list Houndoc.

That was the greatest top 5 outdoor inventions list ever conceived by mankind.

Wow, JL Rockies, that was a nice, if overstated, compliment. I wasn't looking for praise though. Just discussion of what you might put on the list that I didn't. I'm really interested in what people think might be better left off the list and what could be added to it, maybe replacing something.
