What's the best way to add heat/AC vents to this room? I have two vents in the ceiling for the room directly above. I couldn't find anything at Home Depot that really made sense for tapping into these ducts and putting vents basically directly below the existing ones. They had a way to tap into them that would be easy, but it would put the vents the wrong direction, perpendicular to the wall instead of parallel with it. What's a good HVAC store (open to the public) that would have a better selection of stuff? Any ideas? Here's a pic of one of the ducts.

Looking great! Nice recessed lights. :D

You don't want to tap off of that duct. You will need a whole new run to each corner off of the trunk. If you just tap off the existing run you will lose a lot of cfm to those vents.

Not only loss of cfm's but the warm air will always travel up and cold air down resulting in very poor heating and air conditioning. Always run a seperate line off your main trunk.

But... I don't want to. :(

Is one sufficient, or do I need two? There's two in the room above, and this is the other end of the house from the furnace.

OH! I thought you were saying you just wanted to T off of that vent line

I just put one in each room down stairs but my upstairs has vaulted ceilings so I figured the down would not need as much.

Yeah, I was going to do that, but you and Shane set me straight. I'll run a new one. Maybe I'll install one, then the insulation and see how warm the room gets. If it's still too cold I'll do a second, like in the upstairs room. Without insulation or a heat vent it's been about 55 degrees in that room the last few days.

So... It's been almost 14 months since I posted in this thread.

I finished up this project tonight, and thought I'd post some pics to cap off the thread. :)

That does look great! I like how you did the walls. Is it going to be a kids room?

Yes! It's primary purpose is to absorb most of the toys that are spread throughout the rest of the house. It seems to have worked well. It's now all full of the kid's stuff and they actually enjoy spending time down there.

The wall treatment and color are entirely Chicky's ideas. It was a real headache getting all the boards placed nicely without interfering with outlets and what-not. And the caulking... There was a lot of it...

It sure looks like they can take a beating and just be repainted and look new again. Great idea.

We left the entire back area of our living room in the basement for toys / kids area. Now that I look back there and see how many toys he has I realize how spoiled he's become. Sheesh, kids... :D
