Friend Stuck in Eagle Mountain: Anyone want to help with a vehicle recovery?

Here's your chance to use your winch! (I wish mine were installed). The truck is in a safe spot, so there's no rush. i was thinking sometime later tonight would work.

Here's the story:

my friend's son was driving his 2000 f150, and he decided to take the back roads home (like any responsible 4x4 owner would do). He slid off the road and ended up breaking the spindle/lower BJ. Here's the current state:

Here's what we need to do:

- get the vehicle out of there without doing more damage to the front end.
- This involves moving it about 40 yards through a dirt 4x4 road with a few little whoops (too much for a tow truck to handle)
- taking it to a nearby mechanic

We're thinking of renting a tow dolly to get under the front wheel so we can drag it out of there without damaging the front end. There's a slight decline, but it's not in a crazy dangerous spot. I haven't seen it, but I'm sure it'll be a simple extraction. We'll probably need someone with a winch or a strap on the uphill side as he tows it downhill. The truck runs and the brakes work, so someone can get in the truck and help slow it down if needed.

Post up here, or shoot my buddy Brian a text:

Hmmm...my backyard

I can be available to help anytime after 4pm today. I have a winch on the 4Runner and can use the Tundra to pull him wherever we need to. I'll PM you my contact info.

sweet, thanks Andrew. Feel free to shoot him a text for details. We could use one or two more people if anyone else wants to be part of this.

We're also open to suggestions that don't require renting a dolly.

can you not just jack the truck up and fix the ball joint? or get a new spindle/ball joint and replace them on the spot? would be easier then dragging that out of there... I assume its a IFS front which means a lower control arm that has the ball joint in it... they are $265 at orielly's and it would only take 3 bolts to undo and redo... and after you get it out of there take it to a shop to have the alignment redone....

The spindle actually cracked above the lower ball joint. We might be able to weld it, but it's cast steel and I don't have a ready welder.

Steve, I may be able to bring the X & trailer out there this afternoon, we just need to drag it onto the trailer. Some 4x4 lumber "dunnage" could work as skidders to get it up the ramp and forward without damaging vehicle or trailer. A winch or just other vehicle pulling the broken vehicle on the trailer would be necessary.

btdt.

I think you're right. I think a wood skid could get it up on the trailer.

He maid it sound like a regular 2wd tow truck wouldn't be able to make it to where the truck is (then again, the f150 made it, so it can't be that bad). I'm not sure if your X would make it, but I'm betting it would.

Hey, Thanks everyone....Steve is right you guys do rock. I really appreciate the help.

I'm going to round up some pallets and head out that way. Probably be out there around 4pm.

Again THX!!!
