Are any of you guys running full hydro steering on anything besides a buggy? I am considering it on my Scout but I have heard some negative stuff about them.

I dont drive the Scout on the road to much but I like to every once in awhile.

What do you guys think?

I think if I see you on the road w/full hydro I'll shoot you in the knees.

:)

Beyond that, full hydro solves certain issues nicely.

I don't think they are legal for something that's on the road (I could be wrong, I think some big equipment use full hydro). They give no road feed back and have heard they are scary at high speeds. If you can I would swing a hydro assist system.

Why? My full hydro buggy steers better and feels safer than my factory steering on my dodge. Especially at highway speed.

If it's done right, full hydro can be a dream. :)

But if it's done wrong, I'll agree.... shoot'em in the knees. And it's easy to do full hydro wrong... You can put peoples lifes at risk.

We put in full hydro back when we wheeled a nearly stock Bronco and it has been and continues to be the best thing ever! We do sometimes drive the Bronco around town and have never had any problems. I have also driven her from Area BFE into Moab at 55 mph and lived to tell the tale. :D It's like most grand things, just takes a little getting used to and then you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!!

Seems like there was a thread about this not too long ago. As I recall it is not "illegal" but you must do it right. Mine does not return to center, its fine for me but I don't drive it on the road.

mines going full, Mount Logan is doing it ... I fully expect it to be fine at highway speeds (i.e. BFE to moab). But it will be mostly a trailered rig

Post up a progress thread! I've always enjoyed seeing Mount Logan's work.

The beast is in pieces in the garage, her th400 tranny has been reworked, her 14 bolt, Detroit locked rear, Danna 60, Detroit locked front axels and warren 9000 winch robbed. Beauty, and beast’s coveted parts all loaded on the trailer and headed to Logan TOMORROW Morning … waaaa hooo …

So, yes, I’ve very excited and will get some pictures as the work progresses from here …

Mt L, will be doing their magic on a 4 link, coil over, front and rear … the 4 speed atlas is about 2 weeks out, The 5.3L Vortec is ready to go, nice cage also purchased and up their waiting. 39.5” IROK’s on rim locked Walker Evans wheels … John will be building some Tubed fenders to cover those brutes.

Not sure about paint yet, other than I want her yellow and black.

So, yea, pictures to follow … soon … hope to have beauty ready for action sometime in January.

p.s.
I think meat's anxios to go with me up snake creek, hit poleline pass, and see if we dare drop down to the mineral basin trail head ... about then.

Here is a good post on Pirate by redman. A point I've been trying to illustrate in the Mechanical vs. Hydraulic steering dispute.

reddman said:
last easter on the way home my buddies stock chev 1 ton lost a tie rod end at 75mph while he was towing a trailer and in the middle of passing someone, he had absolutely no steering and BARELY lived through the ordeal. he had no effective steering input, so how is that so much better than a someones poorly routed full hydro lines get damaged?

i personally trust my regularly inspected full hydro over most of the old worn "legal" steering setups out there.

Poorly designed / worn mechanical steering is just as dangerous and just as likely to have problems as a full hydro setup. If full hydro steering isn't setup properly to run at high traffic speeds, then something is wrong and you just shouldn't do it. Same scenario with mechanical steering.

The beasts 100% hydro was pure psychotic, suicidal/murderous chaos at any speed over 30mph! It was, like everything else on the beast … pure mank … and VERY dangerous.

What an adrenaline rush it was finding that out! At least I know what a REALLY bad hydro is like. And I’m sure Mt. Logan is going to give me the feel of what a really good system is like.

I have it on my scout (stations set up) I expect to be able to bomb fire-roads and go from camp to the trail head in moab.

Shoot me in the knees and I shoot back ;)

Seems a lot of misinformation around full hydro/legality.... as long as it is done in a safe mannor it is not illegal (who determines safe is another matter) .

Bottom line I have seen more unsafe rigs on the road without full hydro than with.-_-

I have hydro assist right all ready. The reason I am considering full hydro is I am putting coils under the front and I want to move the front axle forward a couple inches but my steering box is in the way of where the coil bucket would sit..........so get rid of the steering box right???
