okay, hear me out and think before you post please.

What if, we start a raffle, for a RME member built buggy?

Star collecting the money now, and as funds allow, build and fab.
of course we're talking about a very inexpensive and heavily donated to project.

So and so has an old running rig, but it needs something, tranny, rear end, maybe just the body is nasty. If we all could chip in our used crap and a couple hundred bucks for tube, this could work.

Probably something small, something that could survive on dana 44 axles. there are a lot of guys out there that would love to have a purpose built wheeler, but don't have the skills, knowledge, funds, or parts to do it. Of course this could be a good advertizing tool for some of the RME shops too.

Good idea, but the biggest problem I see is with liability!
We build a rig, probably not street legal, some idiot that does not understand vehicles like this, wins it, goes out and rolls it and hurts or kilss some one. LAWSUIT!!

There would be a lot of issues involved here........who decides what kind of motor we use, what kind of axles, tranny, gears, tires, wheels, etc.........then we have the issue of who's gonna do all the work to put it together just to have it given away to someone else......I think it's a great idea, just a lot of issues involved to make it work.

those issues shouldn;t be issues at all...to answer them, motor-whatever is given, tranny-whatever is given, t-case-whatever is given, axles-whatever is given, gears-more thanks likely whatever is stock, etc...and the last one, who get to do the work...prolly the ones that want to see this board stay around and grow the most...just pick a couple work days, announce when they are and I'm sure we can get a lot done...:p

I like it, sounds like a good idea to me. My attitude is that I'd be more than willing to donate time and old parts, maybe even a little dough to help out so long as another little jeep gets made big.

Let's just keep our eyes open. We don't need anything great. Maybe just a yj, they're cheap and easy to come by plus, they're real easy to modify, just SOA, a little tube, maybe a little in the way of drivetrain and chop it out and you'd be done. That's just a sugestion.

You know the CA4WDC raffles off a new TJ every year, with mods. I wonder what they do to avoid liability, etc. Either waiver or Insurance.

I like the idea though....

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea......I just think it's harder than you think!!!! Sound's great posted in a forum, it's making it work like you want it to that's the hard part;)

Hard for one person, yes, but for the people of this forum, no. There's a lot of tallent here combined and for what they're thinking of it's really not all that much work at all. For an example it doesn't take much to find a YJ, cut and tube it up a little, SOA it and throw in some 4:10 gears from a junkyard. A donor engine and tranny wouldn't be too hard to come by I wouldn't think, there's going to be costs but they should be reasonable.
There's a lot of members to this forum and the majority of them are experienced builders. It wouldn't be the greatest jeep, that's a given and it might take some time to build but I think it would be very possible. I think it's just the apprehension that keeps us from doing it.

If it is so easy........and so readily available..........then why isn't everyone running out and getting their own rigs set up......tell me that??? If there are so many guys willing to do this for one setup, then why couldn't you just find a couple of friends with some time, and make your own rig.......why do a RME rig at all, unless you're gonna do competition with it and represent RME!! Maybe I don't understand the real reason why we want to do this.

Why don't you try getting this forum to build YOU a rig and see how that works? Try to get help building a rig FOR the forum and it might work a little better.

Well...just what the hell do you think I am doing? I don't do it all by myself.

Well to me you sound like you're just getting into the sport...dont take me wrong, when I first got into the sport I thought it was so damn impossible to find D44s...now to me they are a dime a dozen...then it was unheard of (or so I thought) to find D60s...now they seem to be all over...stuff comes with experience and knowledge...knowing where to look is key...stuff is readily available and its just waiting for the right person to find it...how do you think most rigs are built??? One guy? usually not, its usually a group of buddies that want to improve a rig...if you dont understand why we are talking about building this thing then you obviously haven;t been around the board long enough...the guys that want to do this the most are the ones that have been here the longest...we understand that the board is growing VERY rapidly and one person (Greg) can't cover the costs alone...we are just trying to find something that can net a good profit with as little overhead as possible, and like what was said before, there are some amazing fabricators and builders on this site that I know would love to see this site stick around...Dont you like having a local forum??? This is THE place to be if you're from this area, you can meet a lot of guys and get a lot of hook-ups being here...stick around and you will know what I mean;)

Agreed, I look forward to contributing my time and spare parts to this project if it goes through. It should be cake for us RME guys, if we can't do it then who can?

Great idea, but I too see lots of issues. Too many for me to want to tackle such a undertaking. I barely have time and $$ to build my own rig, let alone a second one.

Nothing is free....

I agree with greg. Yea I have J-yard buddies with basically whatever I want. Not for free. I know guys with this part and that part for sale cheep. again not free. I don't mind throwing out 50$ to greg to keep the board running, but say a 100$ 205 or 250$ in 3/4 ton axles? 250$ for a crappy running 350 v-8? I got other agendas that come first. Tow rig, my rig, trailers, other buggies. In this time of economy it is a lucky thing to have a JOB let alone 1000$ worth of decent parts just lying around for the taking.

On the flip side about a year ago a buddie of mine had a 78 burban sitting in his yard with a lift he wanted. He wanted JUST the lift. Take the rest.... time lost that rig, but they are out there.....

I'll keep an ear to the wind.. I have a 85 honda car for like 50$ we could start with... Needs a coil to start then who knows what from there. It's a motor :D Maybee
