Garage/Tool storage question

So I have the opportunity to purchase four of those huge blueprint flat file drawer things. The drawers are about 45" x 33" and they hold 60 lbs each. There are 8 drawers in each one. These normally sell used for $500-$600 each and I can get them for $200 each. I was thinking they would make an awesome toolbox. That would be over 47,000 square inches of storage for $800. My question is how well do you think they would hold up. I am not a everyday mechanic. I tinker on weekends. I would keep all of my heavy tools elsewhere, drills, airtools, etc. I guess part of thinks it would be awesome to have that much room to "air" out my tools but if they would fall apart in a year then it's not worth it. If they would fall apart in ten years then it probably is.

Opinions?

Any chance you can pass the deal on to others?? :D I want one for maps!

My buddy Sully had a desk like that he used as a tool box, it was just as heavy duty as any tool box you see at the auto parts store or Lowes imo.

We had a couple for our proofs at my last company, they didn't last too long (maybe two years) and we were only putting paper in them...I honestly can't imagine them lasting too long with tools in them. We were in and out of them many times a day and that may have played a role in it, for maps/blueprints where you get at them *maybe* once a day I think they would be great.

I think they would be just fine, as long as you didn't slam your tools down and treat them carelessly. But for the use of small hand tools and stuff like that I think they would be fine.

You know...just because I like you :). Let me see what's up. If they fit where I think they will (under my workbench) I will only need three. That means I have one left over (I'm an engineer which means I can do simple math). If that happens I imagine we can arrange something. I will be taking some measurements in the next couple of days and then let you know.

I am doing something similar. I got a large tape cabinet from my work, the kind that holds mainframe style tapes (they look like 8 track tapes). The cabinet has 10 or 12 roll out shelves, with metal dividers on each shelf to seperate the tapes. Each shelf has ball bearing rollers and can hold at least 50 lbs. It also has 2 large locking doors on the front, nice for that clean look.

This definately is beefier than my "Crapsman" tool box with its crappy sliders.
