Yep,what meat said.
I'm using topo 2.6.2 on my laptop with no serial port so the gpsgate makes topo think the usb is com3. gpsgate works with vista and costs $9 and spanner is from garmin and is free but won't work with vista yet.

If you have programs (like NatGeo TOPO! 3.xx) that don't understand USB interface the program he linked to connects to your USB GPS and makes a pretend serial port so the older map software can connect to your GPS.

Well that makes sense... I havn't tried to interface my GPS with my software (AllTopo) yet.. but it must not be an issue as I have a bluetooth USB adapter I have been using with my wireless NMEA GPS for sometime. Though I rememer it being a PITA to setup so I must have already downloaded something?

So even the new TOPO! programs don't understand USB? Thats is plain stupid...

Looks like the spanner isn't available for the eTrax?? What GPS are you using it with? Garmins site says it will mess up your GPS if you download the wrong firmware?

I've got a GPSMAP60CSx and use gpsgate so I can use the old TOPO software I have. The other software I use works with USB.
Spanner doesn't install on the gps unit, it installs on the computer like a driver. I've never used spanner but I know gpsgate works good.

I haven't stepped up to version 7 so I cant say. I downloaded their "justgps" update and everything works fine.

I just did the iGage update, sure enough it added a 'Garmin_GPS' icon to the GPS tools page, havn't tested it yet but their website says it will do the trick.

I'm still trying to figure out how I was using my USB bluetooth adapter for my wireless GPS pod? I must have found a way to make a COM port a virtual USB?
