I am getting ready to buy some gears and have found a fairly large price difference between different brands of gears. Is there really that big of a difference in the gears themselves?

Which gears would you recommend, or not, and why?

I had a set of Genuine Gears once, bought a vehicle with them already installed. They broke & I had to replace the gearset. But that was because the monkeys at 4WPW didn't install them correctly.

I'm currently running a set of Yukon gears I got from Cruiser Outfitters. Excellent gears & a good price.

Genuine Gears are weak. Way too easy to break. There are a number of good quality brands. Yukon, Motive, Richmond, are all good.

Yep, what they said....Genuines are lower QC than others. There is even a visable quality dif in finish. I have never had genuines set up as well as I would like. I have seen sets that had ok set up at one point on the gear, and completely out of wack on another spot on the gear....

When available always use dana/spicer. I have had good luck with Precision, Motive, and Yukon as well.
What axles are we talking about?

Dana 44's. I am thinking of getting Spicer at this point.

I have broke a set of precision gears on my toyota. BUT to be fair..... the set that broke was the first set that I set up all on my own. So factor that in. I replaced them with a set of US gear and have had no problems. I am still currently running precision gear 5.29's in the front of the toyota (the second set of gears that I set up all by my self) and they have lasted just fine, but ofcourse don't see the kind of abuse that the rear does.

Hey........ That's exactly what was wrong with the set I installed. I finally caught on about 3-4 shims later and ran a pattern through the whole ring gear. Not exactly something I'd like to put my name on. Kinda had to do some math and make an average......

Yukon is my gear of choice, especially for the price. I've never had a set not setup easily and when everything is setup correct, the contact patterns are really good.

I would also say the same for Dana/Spicer.

I've setup Richmond and Motive and played heck getting a decent pattern - even with busting out a pinion depth gauge. I usually don't use one - I just go off the contact pattern only. With them, even with the pinion depth at spec, the contact pattern sucks and you have to change it.
