your set up isn't any different than Gregs.... You want a really good pattern, bring it down on the drive side about .05 or.07 so when you load it up and deflects it runs all the way up the tooth and not off the end of it.
And thanks bobdog!! I have been missing for a while. I found a new love and need a break from the offroad side of things. I found water and Lake Powell!!! Oh and the buggy is for sale.
Both patterns do look good, I've never disputed that, but you can have a good pattern when the pinion is too close/far away from the ring gear. But on his the pinion is too far away and the pattern is high on the face, which you can see better in this picture that Herzog marked up. The white paint is decieving:
Where on mine, you can see that it's quite a bit lower in the root, and there is a gap between the pattern and face, and pattern and root - putting the pattern center of the tooth like it should be.
Right now I'm not saying who's is better, I'm in learning mode. I'm not claiming to know everything about setting up gears. I'm just saying that I would (personally) spend a little bit more time centering the pattern on the face and root. So school me...
EDIT: This is the type of pattern (Gregs) I typically get with Richmond Gears after setting the pinion depth with a gauge, and not going off the pattern alone like I typically do.
