Personally I think the setup in the first pictures look fine. I don't think they were too deep, the second set was definately too shallow.

Good move on eliminating the crush sleeve, they are not problematic once setup but when I have the opportunity I try to use eliminator kits myself as well. Some people just don't want to go the extra expense so I just set them up using the crush sleeve and creep up on the pinion preload, just a PITA for setup crushing that damn thing. Never had an issue with a crush sleeve, but again, I prefer to eliminate them in many applications. Especially when I was racing, I don't think I ever ran one on the strip.

Nice job on the o-ring groove. Looks great.

This project is crazy frustrating.
I have been trying to set up the pinion preload with the shims supplied with the CS eliminator kit. The selection is strange. It came with a .013", one that measures .0135" (really weird), a .015", a.017, two shims that measure .022, a .023, and a .030. This gives the possibilities (plus the spacer) of .013, .0135",.015", .017" .022" .023", and then a jump to .0265", .028", .030" and so on.
With my luck I need an option between the .023" and .0265". I guess I will take the spacer to a piece of sand paper tomorrow and try to take a thou off. I am kind of pissed right now. I don't understand the reasoning behind two .022 shims. A .024 would have been great.

If the bearing was not pressed on all the way or the race not into the support all the way. It would cause the pinion to run deeper not too shallow as mine does. I am going to solve the issue with a shim that will basically do just that. Yes all new bearings.
That's right. I should have gone to bed instead of expecting the brain to be working. All the work above looks great!

Got the pinion set up. The CS eliminator spacer was not even true. I measured .003" difference from one side to the other. Got it to within a thou by sanding on a flat table.
Played around with pinion depth. This is the pattern I am going with.

Look OK to everyone?
