gear questions

I'm thinking about regearing, and don't know much. Coupla questions:

1) if I wanted to regear now, but an ARB is in the future, can I put used gears on the ARB and expect good results? Or would I need new gears with the ARB?

2) who has a good deal on gears?

3) is a master install kit universal, or is it axle specific?

4) how long does it take a shop to do this, ie what's typical pay for an install?

That's all I can think of right now, I might be back later with other questions. But if you could help me out, thanks!

If setup properly the first time, there is no problem using your used gears when you upgrade the dif....

Randys ring/pinion, six states, etc on the gears....stay away from genuine gear....(do a search and you will finds lots of debate about this)

The install kit has the bearings an what not, so yes it is specific to the axle.

Most shops should be able to do it in a day. If I was not doing them, there are only 2 guys I would have do gears for me. Kevin at 6 states in orem, or Andy in Ogden....but he is "management" now :D Kevin is the one that taught me how to do them.... (no, I don't do them for hire any more :) )

When you take out the carrier and install an ARB with the used gears, do you need a new install kit?

How much does a shop typically charge to do it?

Kevin at Six States has helped me out a lot. I'm sure I'll end up taking it there.

You could press the bearings off your carrier and off the pinion, and in the case of 9" and 14 bolts the pinion support bearing, It isn't worth the effort for me, and I ruin them 6/10 times if they've been there for 20 years, there is very little chance you are getting them off intact.

I am not sure what they charge.
You do not have to swap the pinion bearings(typically) when you instal the ARB, but it is a good idea to swap the carrier bearings....just because you are there and they are cheap. Depending on the application and style of seal housing that particular arb has, it may come with a new bearing for one side of the dif.

Kevin and Kent are both great guys.

It would've been a D44 and F8.8, but the D44 I wanted to buy was sold before I decided I wanted it. Thanks for the info guys.
