Im going to regear the XJ 30/44 and would like someone who has experience doing it to help. I have rebuilt everything a vehicle has to offer except axles and I am quite hesitant to jump in. If there is someone out here in the Ogden area that is willing to help, the beer fridge is stocked, and Pizza is just down the road.

Note: I dont mind paying to have it done but would like to learn how to do it myself.

I'm in the same boat but don't want to spend the money to have someone do it (as with everything). I want to learn how to do it. I am slowly getting the parts together. Here's a go read-up for ya that I found....good info:

have you purchased the tools to do the job? if you don't already own them then it will be cheaper to pay someone to do it.

Do you really think I need $500-$600 in tools.......NO....only thing I am going to invest in is a dial indicater to check backlash.

Have fun then. I changed my front and rear twice and when you don't have all the right tools you start to get pretty pissed off. Think about getting the bearings off the carrier and pinion. You'll atleast need a bearing puller, and some peice of crap jig doesn't work to well. Trust me I did it. Getting the inner axle seals off was a pain in the butt too. You might have some of the tools that I didn't the first time so that might be all you need.
List of tools I bought:
Hydraulic press
Dial indicator
in lb torque wrench
set up bearings or hone out your old ones
Tool to drive in new races (big socket)
Air tools
And a bunch of other stuff I can't think of
I don't want to discourage you from doing it, but if you think that you are going to get it done with just buying a dial indicator you might just be sitting under your vehicle for hours cussing.
I didn't want to pay for a shop to do it either so I did end up buying the tools and they have come in handy for doing other things to, so it's not just an investment in the one job. If you are going to do it set aside a lot of time and patience, because it will take all of it.

tools are part of getting the job done RIGHT, but obviously your skills far exceed your tool needs so I am sure you will be fine

you would be amazed at how kind I can be. I ask a simple question about tools and you come across with the "I don't need the tools mentality", so like I said enjoy your gear setting experience.

I always tell people to think about buying the gears and bearings twice, that usually gives them a reality check as to if they are really up to it. Something to think about.

if you have the specs that you need then setting up gears is a cake walk
but then again my skills far exceed my tool needs
must have dial indicater
calipers are good but not nessicary
feeler gauge
lock tight
big sockets
pinion holding device
torch

you would be amazed how easy bearings are to work with when hot
keep in mind that a bearing can get too hot
and probably a few other items that i cant remember, i said my skills are good not my memory

I would seriosly discourage use of a torch to heat bearing. While it works and I have done it, it would be too easy to destroy the bearing. I would recomend investing in a small cheap deep fryer with thermostaat and heat them in hot oil.

Sure take it to tattons!!!!! They did mine after my friend melted my first set for $200 per axle. This was the labor cost. Parts are another story.
