I'm off Thursday! We'll be in Durango on the 28th :(

I'm down for thursday--may be a bit rainy, but it'll be fun.

Who else would be down? Kurt? Olli? Tracy?

If we go, should I drag my jeep up there, or take the dodge? Just ride along with a trail worthy 4x4?

If you are talking to me, I bought it from the Ranger Station in Kamas about 8 years ago. It shows all of the wilderness area and some of the outlining areas too. Let me know when you go and I will bring it. I am sure the main office on North Temple and just off Redwood Road would have some. It will most likely be the same one (not updated). They put free maps in a box at the info board at the Ranger station in Kamas (not as much detail), but they are dated 1998 and many of the roads on it are closed, and they do not show Gold Hill on them. I would like to talk to the ranger at the station in Kamas but they close a 4:30 p.m. Here is the cover to the map.

gold hill

Olly and I went exploring up Mirror Lake Highway on Wednesday (8/11/04)... ended up on a bunch of dirt roads around Gold Hill...

Couple questions for the knowing:

1. Some old books of mine show Gold Hill as a ghost town, pics of fallen cabins, etc... Anyone know where they are?

2. Can one get to Whitney Lake from the Gold Hill area? Topo's say no, but I think I saw a open road heading down to the lake, as the other heads to ridge of Gold Hill Mountain

Any cool spots to check out in the area?

Thanks in advance

Yes there are two ways to gold hill in the Uintas one is whitney road and the other gold hill road both turn off from hiway 150 five miles from the wyoming border..

There are TWO gold hill areas.. one near wendover nevada and one in the Uintas.. there are no ruins at the one in the Uintas but Mill City still has some log foundations.. They built a flume from Mill City through the gold hill area 30 miles into Evanston.. there are just a few signs of it now.. Weed and tree covered rock mounds through Mill City Creek area.. Ive been up there every year sense 1970

Wow, 13 year thread bump :D

Certainly familiar with the two different Gold Hills, I own property in one (Tooele County) and am still on the hunt for the foundations in the other (Unitas). I need to get back up there and poke around soon.

Welcome to RME!

I've been up and around Gold Hill a couple times. The back way into Whitney isn't that bad, little bumpy but definitely more entertaining than dodging UTVs and forty foot houses on wheels on the main drag and the campsite where that road fetches the lake is almost always empty. I've never found any cabins or mining remains along that stretch though? Topo shows one prospect near the highway, but I haven't checked it out yet. I've read that there are remains of a logging flume in several areas up there, but I haven't found that yet either.

I want to know more about this Jeep road between Whitney and Smith and Morehouse, is that open? I've never tried it, I'm told it crosses private property with locked gates in Weber Canyon.
