I think it would be great to have something like that, get rich that way maybe, but the fear of being trapped underground in a cave-in scares the h@ll out of me!

I find this intriguing, But what are we talking about here, Is the winning bidder paying a finders fee? or what?
The thought of paying a yearly fee isnt bad at all but what does the difference between patented and unpatented claims mean? really?

No one would bother you out there, FOR SURE. It's very, VERY remote.

Im sure we were out that way last weekend

PATENTED MINING CLAIM: A patented mining claim is one for which the Federal Government has passed its title to the claimant, making it private land. A person may mine and remove minerals from a mining claim without a mineral patent. However, a mineral patent gives the owner exclusive title to the locateble minerals. It also gives the owner title to the surface and other resources.
With a Patented Cailm: You own the Land as well as the minerals

UNPATENTED MINING CLAIM: An Un-patented mining claim is a particular parcel of Federal land, valuable for a specific mineral deposit or deposits. It is a parcel for which an individual has asserted a right of possession. The right is restricted to the extraction and development of a mineral deposit. The rights granted by a mining claim are valid against a challenge by the United States and other claimants only after the discovery of a valuable mineral deposit.
With a Unpatented Claim: You are leasing, from the government, the right to extract minerals. No land ownership is conveyed.

Im curious about the term "for a specific mineral deposit" I wonder if its a general term or if a mine has a designated type of mineral?
Maybe its just lack of sleep and or a drink or two...?
It still sounds like fun

I have been there... some old rusty train car sitting out there.. and out to the west of it there are hills covered with mines but takes a lot of hiking.

if you head out past kelton, take a south direction on the west side of the lake and head WAY WAY south.. down towards where the old rail line crosses the lake almost. I dont know the exact location been about 10 years since I have been out there.

There is a Rock Quarry where we like to camp down there, and if your heading past kelton, then head south eventually you can take another westerly route where there used to be an emergency sheriff's cabin out there. We used to go out and replace windows, and stock it up with my dad and brother. Do some shooting out there.

But the train car is way south of kelton.. I can ask my dad see if its still out there.

I'm very familiar with the area, I'm just trying to picture where a train car is at the north end of the Newfies... If your dad knows pass it on.
