I had a 2008 Suzuki B-King for 3 years. I currently ride a '13 KTM 500 XC-W.
My addition to some of the invaluable information is pay attention to traffic, but more importantly to the drivers themselves if you can see them. I ride here in San Francisco on a daily basis. I see more idiots make their move (or their tell as I see it) before their vehicle reacts. That gives me more time to go past, around, or slow down whichever is appropriate.
Also, and this WILL get you in trouble at some point, going faster than the traffic around you makes them less likely to hit you. HOW much faster is subjective.
Also please take a Motorcycle Safety Course, the practice is great and the techniques are what you need to learn for those situations you WILL find yourself in.
Other than that its all practice, practice, practice, and having a healthy respect for ANY bike. They can protect you and kill you.
Rubber Down.
Also, like mentioned don't wave at Scooters.

I can almost ditto what Brian said.

had a CBR 600. It is an interesting feeling to be able to look all around you in traffic and know nothing can touch you in speed (Corvettes, Porches, etc...) but everyone can kill you (even Geo's).

Idiots like to turn left in front of you. Steel toed boots are helpful.

Motorcycle safety course and a Motorcycle endorsement is manditory.

Thanks for all the responses guys! Sounds like the number 1 concern is the stranger driving next to me. I got out today and did about 20 miles of city driving to get used to the bike before It sees rush hour.

Come on over Stratton, show me what she's got!!

Id like to carve some canyons, not sure if I'd ever get out of first gear tho. I discovered that first gear and 7K RPM = 70MPH, Keep in mind it redlines at 12K RPM!!!! What canyons are on the must ride list?

Thanks for all the pointers guys. I did 140 miles yesterday and I feel much more confident. I can't believe how many other bikers I passed without helmets. As many bug splatters as I had, I'd never go without one.

What canyons are on the must ride list?

East canyon up to Morgan, Monte Cristo Highway (hwy 39?), Wolf creek Pass past through Heber-Francis-Tabiona.. Fairfiew canyon to Huntington, Nebo loop from Payson to Nephi.
I think they are all still closed for the winter though..

A fun winding road is from rush valley over the mountain to Dugway.. kind of short, but running it back and forth is fun.

Big and little cottonwood are nice, it would be a bit cold up there I would imagine, Emigration Canyon to East Canyon is fun as well, just beware of the cyclists.
