I'd like to get certified to operate a HAM radio. Are there any good resources (local or online) to get started?

not sure if you are LDS or not, but I would assume the church would have some classes going on, if your not then I am sure you have a friend that is that could get you the info. I know back in WA we had HAM radio classes a good amount

who would you contact to find out? What calling is in charge of HAM radio training?

We had a guy back home in our ward that was a old military guy that loved old radio stuff, so he taught the classes. I would start by just asking the bishop of your ward if he knows anyone. I would be kinda shocked if they didn't have someone in the stake that taught it. I helped install the antenna in our building back home so I would assume that they would be putting them in a good amount of the stake centers. I will ask our 2nd counselor in the bishopric to see if he knows anyone or where to ask.

My boy is 10 and I have him practicing on an iphone app. $5 and you can get access to all of the questions and answers and practice tests. The 'Look Who's Talking' books are good as well, but they cost more than the app

As Sami mentioned the QRZ website is a good place for practice exams as well

Aren't you in boy scouts? I would assume there would be someone with boy scouts that teaches it and also maybe a merit badge for it

I'm the ham guy in our stake. I've got 10 or so guys in the different wards to do the emergency communications. None of them had their licenses when we started.

The below info is pulled from what I've sent to each new guy as they were called. My 11yo son (now 16yo) studied the guide on the plane home from DC, took a few practice tests, and passed the test the next night.

Here are several study guides:
(I found these by googling "ham technician study guide")

http://studyguide.eqth.info/

(these are the ones I sent out in previous years)

http://n4maa.us/Technician Study Guide 2.0.pdf

Seriously, scan the material and then go to the sites below and take the practice tests until you pass.

Then go to the SL County EOC (3380 S. 900 West (west side of the street)) on the last tues of the month. Call to preregister.

Check here for other times/places if the SLCounty EOC isn't convenient:
