Hard to shift Tj

Sorry again for all the newbie questions but im trying to learn as much as i can while its all taken apart. So the question i have is that it is very difficult to shift. It is a five speed manual. a 97 tj. shifting into first at high rpms is very difficult, (i have to wait until i am almost to a complete stop) and the shift between first to second is equally difficult. Once you get into the higher gears its ok though. is it a clutch? or the gear? Any advice is greatly appreciated! thank you.

Using what little common sense that i have and that is not much. I cant quite figure why you would even want to shift into FIRST gear at a HIGH RPM'S?
(gear bind is the reason the trans wont let you shift)

but your problem with 2nd is hard to diagnose with out seeing the jeep.

We are all good just not that good!:D:rofl:

I think he means that he can't shift into 1st at speed, but it will go in at/close to a stop.

IMO your clutch is going out, or it's a problem with a leaky slave or master cylinder that operates the clutch.

yep sorry, i pretty much have to wait until a complete stop to shift into first.
greg... As far as the clutch going out, do i just wait for it to go out? or is it better to repair before everything goes out? again sorry for the "stupid questions" just trying to learn! :) thanks again.

The question is what tranny do you have? AX5's in the 4cyl are all like that in going to 1st from a higher gear. 2nd shouldn't be as bad but you very well could have a worn out clutch or leaky slave cyl. What motor do you have and that will tell us if you have the AX5.

I have the 4.0 L straight six and it is a 5 speed

as far as down shifting it is either way, up or down, just always difficult to get in. I have to pull fairly hard just to get it to go in.

its got 128,000 on it, i bought it with 120,000 so im not sure exactly what its history is, but i have not had in deep water (although it has been in some water, just not deep enough go that high)

is it something big enough that it should be parked until i can get it fixed? or is it not too big of a worry?

Clutches are cheap, but start by checking your clutch line for leaks and verify proper movement of the slave cylinder, also would help to bleed the clutch to improve engagement. If you haven't already, buy a good shop manual for your Jeep, it will save you tons of money in the future.

If you are pulling the t-case, you might as well drop the transmission to inspect the clutch and possibly replace it, no need to do the work twice!!

thats what i was thinkin, thats why i started asking. The t case is already out. I pulled it to put in a SYE and found that it had a crack in it, so i picked up a tera low to replace it :D Now i just need time to heal my stupid stomach and ill look into tranny and then put it all back together!
