Someone forwarded the thread of the amazing Mary Ellen Gulch recovery which I read with great interest. The helpful "get-it-done" spirit of the group really impressed me and reminded me of the wheelin' buddies I used to hang out with decades ago in the Ogden area, so I figured I absolutely have to join this community...if you'll take me. I've been out of Utah for most of my adult life and am just returning, this time with a large family of little ones. Which means my rig is a little bigger this time and not really much of a rock-crawler. But it works for my purposes (overlanding, exploring deserted western roads and trails) and it still spends a fair amount of time offroad. But pretty tame stuff compared to the offroading I used to do in Utah in my previous rig, a heavily modified, 6 inch lifted 79 shortbed Chevy, running 36s. I'm looking forward to getting to know you, checking out your rigs, reading about the trails you like, and contributing to this site.

Cheers!

Greg

Welcome to RME, glad you found this place to be a quality community... it really is a great group of people.

Suburbans are great all-around 4x4's, especially when it comes to hauling around the family! Keep an eye out on the Upcoming Trips or plan one yourself!

Welcome to the site, burbs are cool, as are lifted '79 chev pickups.

Most of my "trail riding" happens in a jeep, but I've put a lot more "4-wheel drive" miles on my old burbs and now my eXcursion since I've owned that particular jeep, mainly in the snow.

Hey now! Nothing is wrong with portland. I grew up in Tillamook and once im done with school here im going to do everything I can to move back to the portland area.

Tillamook is not Portland. I would give anything to retire in the Tillamook/Oceanside area...Portland on the other hand...that's another story.

well since my parents live in Tillamook I cant exactly move back there, portland has some good hospitals I would like to work at. I would be content in Banks commuting to portland.

Tillamook area is one of my favorite places. I've done a lot of fun dual-sport riding in that area on logging roads, but not a lot of four wheeling actually. Love that area though. I lived in Portland but in Washington County near Beaverton and actually enjoyed it for the most part. Lots of good things. It was a good lifestyle I sometimes I miss it a lot. But with this wet weather we have been having lately in Utah it reminds me more and more of Portland.

The lifted 79 Chevy was a very capable four wheeler and a great "4x4 education vehicle". It had plenty of power with a strong running 400 and a good Mickey Thompson/Tuff Country suspension set up. Plus I was in my teens and early 20s, felt to be immortal, and took all kinds of risks in it that I would never do now. Surprisingly, I never rolled it or damaged it too badly. But I got the thing stuck in mud and snow dozens of times, a few times seriously, requiring the kind of extraction similar to the Mary Ellen Gulch recovery which brought me to this website.

In contrast, the diesel Suburban due to its size and weight is used for relatively low risk offroading. It is also a work vehicle. I use it to tow all sorts of heavy trailers, even big three axle rigs for hauling heavy equipment. And it is a kid hauler and minivan alternative that my wife drives a fair amount (she is a cub scout den leader). I mounted a rear facing fourth row bench in the back which increased belted seating from 8 to 11-one of the most useful mods I've done on it actually.

I have always driven through but never stopped in Portland, no desire to, but I too will probably retire if not live back in the pacific northwest. Growing up in WA and living there my whole life makes it hard to live int he desert

Welcome to RME and back to Utah
