Hello,

I am a single parent with two teenage boys and one teenage daughter. I have 40 years of off roading under my belt. Only the last 5 years in our XJ. The XJ is used 50/50 on/off road. We have done most of our off roading in the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire. However, right now we are slinging mud in Florida. We are planning a trip to Moab in late September and will be driving the XJ along with a small camper.

We have modified our XJ and plan to do a lot more modifications before heading to Moab. The engine is a stock 4.0 long block and has had everything else upgraded. We presently have a 5" lift and are in the works to fabricate a custom suspension. Everything else will follow. In other words, we are rebuilding everything from the axles up except what is in the engine bay and the exhaust. The exhaust is handled by a performance wrapped header and a 2.5" exhaust system.

We are looking forward to our new build and Krawling in Moab.

With the suspension we are now considering, thanks to the people who shared in my other thread http://www.rockymountainextreme.com/showthread.php?t=67040 , we may have to rethink when we will be coming. It would make no sense in doing Moab if we do not have a good suspension under the XJ. A couple weeks back I had to replace an adjustable lower control arm because it was made from solid stock and busted in half. We have decided to go with a different set up and with the advice of Moab's good people we are seriously thinking of how we can "get 'er done."

Don't put off coming to Moab because you don't have the "best" suspension. You can have plenty of fun with a mild short-arm lift and 31" tires. :) Then you can work on your ideal setup later!

Listen to I Lene. My first trip to Moab 3 years ago was in a stock TJ, 4 banger with 31" tires. It was so much fun that we did it 3 more times that year and continue to go there. Fast forward to now and we have a 4" lift, 33's and lockers. I think the most important thing would be to have atleast a limited slip that works and some trail companions. Let me know when your coming and I would meet you.

Yes, No, don't wait! We take my husband's stock XJ with us to Moab every year and it takes 3-1/2 rated trails pretty well. He does have to put his hitch in the receiver so he doesn't ruin his bumper but thats about it. Oh, and he has a little rocker damage from Fins and Things, but you know what they say about chicks digging body damage.. :)

I agree, I spent my first 4 years at moab in the early 90's doing Moab trails with a 77 ford f150 with a 5" lift and no lockers, and loved it.. it can be a progression. its almost better to run it semi-stock so you can appriciate the money and time you spend in mods.

I agree! Don't wait! You will have a BLAST with your current setup... trust us. The Moab trails are very diverse for different types of setups.

After a trip to moab, you will have more ideas what you want to improve upon as well.

If you can wheel it, go for it!

What I found with a more capable rig, is running 2wd a bunch on the easier trails.

Thanks for the Inspiration.

Right now our XJ sits with a 5" adjustable short control arm lift with 2.5" leaf springs with 2.5" shackles, 32" M/Ts. No vibrations so no SYE. Front fenders have been cut out and YJ flares installed, rock bumpers fore and aft, and a roll bar.

I guess, that would be enough. Thanks.
